This is my first Pestle and mortar. I've always used a blender in the past. The degree with which for can Pulverize food or spices and Herbs is much more controllable. With a Blender, it becomes instant Mush since there is No real speed control. Even on Low it's basically uncontrollable. With the Pestle and Mortar, It's up to you how much you Grind it. Besides, it actually makes you feel that you are actually a part of preparing food dishes . I Love using this Kitchen tool.
