The wheels roll smoothly and are large enough diameter that they easily cross gaps/bumps in the patio stones. The pipe perfectly fit the 2 inch diameter umbrella and has an insert for the smaller 1.5 inch standard. The pipe is well affixed to the box, so I know it won't fall off.

The box itself isn't heavy enough to hold up an umbrella in the breeze and just putting potting soil in it and some flowers won't cut it either. However, if you put some rocks in the bottom and/or use regular dirt, it will be plenty heavy at half full and you can put potting soil and flowers on top of that. I used some random rocks/concrete in the bottom and our large 11 foot umbrella stayed up on a fairly gusty day.

I used 2" steel pipe leftover from remodels to make a hangar for a bird feeder, using this base to hold it. Filled the base with rocks and there's no way this thing is going to blow over even with our occasional 70-mile wind gusts.

Base is well made, attractive, and holds plenty of ballast material.

We use it as a base for an umbrella and it does great even in wind conditions. I put in a base of small pebbles then a layer of soil and finally planted a bunch of flowers

We have super low expectations for what we order on Amazon, as quality is often just junk. However, we decided to take the risk on this. We were so impressed. This is the item on our patio that is like the icing on the cake because we can make something usually ugly like an umbrella stand into something useful and beautiful. A great combo! It was much bigger than we thought it would be and fit 4 pots easily. These are 6 inches diameter. 7-8 inch would fit too. We put a bag of medium-sized river pebbles in the bottom. We are making sure to move it with the base, using the umbrella part sparingly to make sure it lasts, so, the welding isn't loosened. It is really great and should withstand our coastal winds if we make sure to keep the umbrella closed when it is super windy. Yay for a great find!!! Would recommend for the great piece it is!!

Update: we ditched the tiny rocks and got bigger pots because they would fall over when we moved them and the rocks would fall like in a rain stick. We ended up getting 7 inch pots and just put some giant rocks in between. We move the stand a lot. Still love it!

Good alternative to center table umbrella stands that limit under-table space and are hard to maneuver. This box is moveable, attractive and I love that I can put plants in it. One plate screw didn't want to go all the way in, but with the rocks beneath soil and plants and the weight of the stand itself, I don't think it matters. It seems very stable. It's not easy to roll around and that is good because with the wind on our terrace, it would be rolling by itself. I'll put a tray under it to guard against concrete staining. Really like it so far!
