I was sceptical after reading some negative reviews but as it turned out this thing saved me over $100.00 dollars. The local tool rental business's wanted $150.00+ to rent a tracer so I rolled the dice on this unit. I traced my sewage pipe all the way to the main connection. My sewage line is ABS plastic but with a 14 gauge wire next to it in the trench. I just connected the transmitter on the wire end that was exposed at the sewage clean out and the ground on a large screwdriver that I stuck in the ground and this unit worked perfectly. Make sure you read the instructions carefully because it does work differently than other line chasers I've used in the past.
It does work, was able to trace a sprinkler control

I was skeptical given the poor reviews, but there's no way I'd spend the 300+ for a professional tracer and there was a lot of good reviews saying it does work, so i took the gamble.
It does work. I put a screwdriver in the ground as suggested and connected black to it. Connected red to the wire that wasn't working, and traced it across the yard, under a sidewalk, across more yard, and to the edge of some bushes where it was buried about a foot down in the garden bed. When i had a very strong signal the sound got louder as it went toward the wire and cut out when i was directly over the wire. Further away from the source it was loudest over the wire and didn't cut out. I was not able to locate the break, i think its somewhere under the bushes, but this did help me jump around the break.
I did try another wire and it seemed to just have a tone everywhere. Also, i had a wire laying on the ground, not connected to anything, and had a tone on that as well. So it's probably not going to work for every wire every time, and may give false positives for nearby cabling. I don't know if the professional 300+ models would do better or not in those cases.

Bought this to locate a break in the underground dog fence. Once we figured out how to use it, we found the break fairly quickly. You do have to have the sensor very close to the ground. Much cheaper than having the fencing company come out.
Easy to use

I had owned the 'official' dog fence break locator which is simply a cheaper version of these tone locators and didn't really have any success with them so I thought I'd step up to a pro model. I ordered this with complete skepticism.
We have nearly 2.5 acres fenced for our dogs and get breaks every couple of years from tree roots. This year it was a lightning strike.
The instructions are of course a tad lacking because of the poor translation. Essentially, what you need to do is run a separate ground wire. This might be tricky if your dog fence controller is located in the house or basement. A separate ground wire wrapped around a screwdriver and shoved into the ground is all you need, strip the end and attach the black clip to that. Attach the red clip to one side of the fence wire (It's just a big loop). Then trace the wire in one direction, the direction where the tone is the strongest, and follow it until it drops off. Mark the area. Go back to the source switch the red clip to the other leg and follow it in the other direction until the sound drops off. You'll have the general area (5-foot area) where the break will be. It's super accurate for helping you locate the line. Dig it up, and repair it.
Highly recommend this tone locator.
