One of the best on the market
Chris Rog✓ Verified Purchase•November 14, 2023
We decided to go with the Pura X on a whim while fighting with constant problems with our Litter Robot 3. The price is a lot more than we wanted to spend, especially given the problems with the LR3 we recently dropped, but it has worked out far better than any of the other automatic litter boxes we've tried. In the month we've had it, we've had only minor issues that can be addressed or worked around, and are worth dealing with in exchange for not having to scoop cat waste.
With our three medium-sized cats (8-10 lbs each), we have to empty the bin twice/week (about every 3-4 days). The Pura X does an amazing job of maintaining the smell, and is comparable to other open-air litter boxes before a cleaning cycle is run. We only occasionally notice any smells, and it's usually right after a cat has used it, but before the automatic cleaning has run.
Pros:
- Functions as advertised
- The Pura X is much quieter and completes its cleaning cycle much faster than other units we've tried. You can still hear it, but it's not nearly as loud and will be drown out by a closed door or normal daytime activities.
- Smaller than many other automatic litter boxes on the market, including the LR3, and its design makes better use of the space it occupies. Cats can sit on the top, and the company even sells a pet mat fitted for the top of the unit for this purpose.
- Sensor placement far more logical than most other options on the market, which make it far more reliable and, thus far, has been maintenance-free.
Cons:
- Expensive af
- Requires an app and wifi access to access all of the configuration options and fully setup the device
- Waste containment bin is small, and the design can lead to waste falling out of the bin and onto the floor under the unit if it mounds near the back. Unfortunately, by the time you get the notification that the bin is full, it is likely already too late to avoid this.
- The unit will always run a deodorize cycle during *every* cleaning cycle, and -- at the time of writing -- cannot be decoupled from the cleaning cycle. This makes the scheduled deodorizing function somewhat extraneous/useless, and goes through the deodorizer very quickly.
- The grate/fence has rather large holes, and will let smaller bits of waste through and retain them in the main litter area. There are currently no replacements for this, but can be worked around by zip-tying a better grate to the existing one, and/or using very solidly clumping litter and a long enough delay before auto-cleaning cycles.
I know there are more cons than pros here, but this is a solid unit, all things considered. We definitely prefer this over the Litter Robot, or that other one with the crystals. While this is more expensive than other options on the market, I would argue that it's worth it. If the price is prohibitive, stick with one of those simple two-tray manual sifting litter boxes or the traditional scoop, and save yourself the pain of fighting with garbage sensor placement and design, or expensive special-purpose litters.

Update Has worked without issue for 8 months so far
Megan D.✓ Verified Purchase•November 12, 2023
Update 14 months: still working good. I have noticed my older cat (17 years old) is well deservedly last and she hangs her butt over the edge and pee drains down the entrance. I corrected this by putting a lower box in our bedroom. This isn't a device issue except for if you know you cat needs extra space. Some like a big box. She was fine with the size until she is became more finicky with age.
My toddler moved a cat scoop and it got stuck underneath as the drum was rotating. I thought for sure I would have issues once I pried it out. It worked fine after.
Also since purchasing we got a dog. A dog that will stick her head in a cat box and nose through the cat litter so this is helpful since she can't get to the "treats" under the cat litter 🤣. Still get 4 stars because the odor liquid refill requires you to pull out the drum and a full cleaning a little time consuming. But overall no sensor or wifi problems for that ver a year. On sale For a couple hundred less then the the major brand I still think a good purchase.
Original review: I bought this for a Black Friday sale last November. Skeptical but with 3 cats, but thought what the heck. I was scooping everyday. The money was worth not having to scoop constantly. **important note for those who don't like to read directions thoroughly like me sometimes** WHEN YOU ADD NEW LITTER MAKE AURE YOU PRESS THE "OK" BUTTON TWICE. Then it will say leveling out and reset the weight. If you don't, when you added the new litter it assumed a cat went in the box and it will not clean as I learned the hard way 2 days lol a
So far it has worked without issue besides that snafu on my part. Connected to my wife no prob.
Easy to set up. I just use regular ole Scoop Away cat litter.
About every 1-2 months I take the kid off and pull the drum out and give everything a wipe down and little vacuum on the bottom. Refill the deodorizer. Takes about a half hour. I used to have to wash my regular cat box every week so I like this better.
I have a scoop near the box out of habit and for another cat box I use on vacations so I have two"”I left the scoop to close under the bottom of the unit, or one of the kids put it in the box, I don't know but I got jammed in there when it tried to empty. I thought for sure it broke the motor trying to go and go with it jammed. I unplugged it and got it out and it worked fine! That was about 2 months ago. So very thankful.
I think this is one of those products where you either get a good one or a lemon. If you get a good one you're golden! I do not expect these electronic devices to last forever. I feel if I get a solid 2 years I would repurchase at a sale price again. I think I paid 450 for Black Friday sale. If it goes longer a bonus. Things just aren't made to last especially with all these little computer parts and I imagine the dust from the litter gets in there and coats stuff.
I learned after a couple weeks for my 3 cats I get exactly 3 days before I scoop. That's better then once or twice a day so for people that complain about the time frame I guess it depends on what you had to do before.
I took a tip from another review and got the 8 gallon glad bags and they work fine. I just make sure I don't have anything sticking up to get caught in the rotation.
Hope this helps. If you have the dough and you wait for a sale totally worth it in my book.

Surprisingly Great

When we bought this, we were a little skeptical it would work for our 7 cats. We were absolutely sure the two really timid cats wouldn't go anywhere it. We were wrong. All 7 of the cats are using it and they began very quickly. I LOVE that I don't have to scoop 8 litter boxes twice a day. Instead, I have to empty the bag twice a week and it takes about 2 minutes total. It does a good job of cleaning although an occasional clump gets left behind. It also deodorizes pretty well. I don't find the smell of the deodorizer to be unpleasant. I'm sure my cats are thrilled to have a box that is always clean, too. One of our cats had a bad habit of peeing all over the house (no medical issues; he's just a jerk). Even he has quit doing that, which I'm over the moon about. We love this so much we bought a second one. The only negatives are that heavier or older cats might have problems getting in and out of it and that the scale doesn't always register the correct weight. One of my cats varies between 11.7 pounds and 15.2 pounds (and anywhere in between) depending on how he's standing in it. Other than those two minor issues, we're extremely happy with these boxes. (And by the way, customer services is great, too.)

This can be difficult to deep clean, but it really doesn't need to be deep cleaned that often as long as you make sure to dump the drawer everyday and change out the litter regularly. I've went months without taking it apart to clean it fully.
It is pretty heavy, but it doesn't take up an unreasonable amount of space. I have it in a corner by my trashcan.
Depending on the type of litter, there isn't much of a smell unless it has just been used. I use Dr. Elsey's litter. A hard clumping litter definitely works best. Don't overfill it or you will lose a lot of litter that ends up in the drawer. I don't go by the percentages shown in the app or on the screen as I've not found them to be accurate. I just look at it to check the level isn't below the minimum.
There is a scented spray that's included that sprays periodically and that seems to work well as I hardly ever notice a smell until it runs out. One bottle of the spray lasts months.
I had this 10 months and there was a power failure. At first it wouldn't turn on at all. After a few hours, it turned back on but the screen wouldn't work. The box worked as normal but I couldn't see any of the settings on the screen. I contacted PETKIT and they sent me a brand new one within a couple of weeks. It wasn't a difficult process to get the replacement and the customer service was excellent. They also didn't ask that I ship the broken one back which is awesome since it technically still works for the most part, so I can keep it as a backup if I ever need one.
The app for this could definitely use some upgrades, but I don't really use it anyway. Do we really need an app for everything? Just dump the waste out daily and pay attention to the amount of litter in the box. I do keep the app to force it to do an extra clean or spray extra air freshener and it works fine for that.
The sensors work VERY well, and it will stop whatever it's doing when the kitties walk up. At first they were curious and would poke their heads in when it started to clean to see what was happening. It stops immediately as soon as they are in range. I never worry about them being hurt by it like I've seen happen with some of the other self-cleaning litter boxes.
All in all, this is 100% worth the money. I can't imagine going back to the "easy clean" rolling litter box or scooping.
