I have been using this shovel on a large pile of mulch. It has been an amazing tool for the job. The shovel is big, enabling me to transfer large amounts of mulch to the cart. And it's METAL. I researched several other competing shovels, but they were all made of some type of polymer plastic. I can't imagine them holding up over time. Since the mulch was on my driveway, I was constantly scraping the shovel on the concrete. While the paint came off on the end of the shovel, it's holding up great. Can't imagine a plastic one doing that. And it's extremely lightweight, but sturdy in construction. An excellent shovel for the job!

I don't know where this Hooyman came from, but I have quite a few great yard tools from them in my garden shed now (they do seem to be an actual real company, though, which you could guess by the quality). This shovel is a pretty standard size and shape, but it looks a lot more refined than whatever I had off the shelf from before. I did chip a piece of the coating off when I accidentally banged the head on the concrete the other day, but I guess that can happen.
Ergonomically, I thought it would be a little small for me since I'm tall, but it's really not. It seems very natural. The little padded part of the handle is also at the right spot, and all Hooyman long tools seem to have that. Light and nice. I've been using it to shovel giant, dense piles of oak leaves from the neighborhood after blowing them into a pile, then using it to compact them in a bucket. Works well and will definitely serve in the winter for snow as well - I am interested to see if it has snow sticking to it less than my other aluminum shovel without the coating.
