This is a great tarp. Over the past 2 1/2 years, I've used it more than a dozen times while camping and several dozen times in the yard, testing different configurations. It is still in new condition.
I just got back from the U.P. and wanted to buy an 8' x 8'. This is why I came back here... to see if Gold Armor sells an 8x8... but they don't. =(
The 10x10 is perfect for my hammock and to cover anything I need. With all the tie outs, you can make sure this tarp is tight and will keep the wind and rain out!
Please make me an 8' x 8' to compliment the 10' x 10'!

Nothing lightweight here.

I'm a Kayak Camper, so pack weight isn't so much of an issue. Which is fortunate since this rain fly has a little heft to it. Not a whole lot, but it's easily the heaviest piece of gear making up my hammock shelter. The tarp completes my set-up and is very much appreciated. Just the difference of having a wind break is worth putting a tarp up.
I've just now got this tarp in the mail and I immediately set it up. Here are my initial impressions...
Beyond the pack weight, what struck me most is in the quality. The material is dense, fine thread treated ripstop nylon, with a small mesh locking weave. The fabric should be very tough to abrade & tear. It's well trimmed, with taped & sewn hemming all around & a double sewn ridge line. There's 9 anchor points around the hem, one in the tarps center, with solid sewn backing tabs and heavy duty plastic D rings. I've fit two spare carabiners to the ridge line points to attach the tarp directly to my hammock support straps.
The 12' tarp extends well over a foot at each end of my Fox Outfitters double parachute hammock. Even with the tarp's peak at over 6.5', the sides extend well down below the hammocks hang, and blocks any breeze from blowing across the hammock. Anchor lines are high visibility para cord with tensioners. The tent stakes are anodized aluminum with 3 notches & each stake has a high visibility cord bite tied on each end, making them easy to spot & pull out the ground. Good attention to detail there, although, I only wish there were more than just 4 stakes included.
Two tie points along the hem have tie lines but no stakes, although I do see how those two points may be best anchored to something off the ground to open the sides up. Not anchoring the two points mid way along the sides tends to let the sides come in or out when a breeze comes up. I'll be getting two more anchor stakes to fill the need.
Beyond all that, under the tarp there's plenty of room under cover, protected from the elements.
Since I just got the tarp and have only set it up I can't describe how it will be in the rain, but obviously from what quality I see in it now, I have no doubt the tarp will easily keep things dry.
Is it worth the price? Absolutely! Outside of adding two more ground stakes & not being a fly-weight tarp to pack along, I can't find nothing against it. If you don't have a tarp & need one, or if you need a tarp, but don't have a lot to spend, definitely buy this one. It's worth the price & more.
October 2021 Update: Since my purchase in 2019, the tarp has lasted three summers of HEAVY use. I'm replacing the tarp not for any design defect, but for that the accumulated months of sun exposure has weathered the fabric & made plastic eyelets brittle. Nylon & Plastic can only take so much. The fabric has developed tears, & leaks. I've certainly got my money's worth from it.
I won't be buying another though. Instead, my next tarp shall have metal eyelets & stouter web strap attachment points, no more plastic to break. I may spend more accordingly, but for my use, it's needed.
THIS TARP IS STILL A GREAT VALUE. It's just for me, not able to go the distance.

Early Impressions

Its very rare that I do immediate reviews on durable goods.
I needed a beater tarp for Texas sun, because I already destroyed a good tarp in it. I looked at everything available on Amazon, eBay and several outfitters and finally decided on this one. With the 5 year warranty and satisfaction guarantee, it seemed like a good risk.
The material is ripstop polyester, backed with ehat appears to be minimal (probably ¼oz per yard) polyurethane coating. It also has a DWR(Durable Water Repellent) application on the face. Its very similar to the DD tarp, that costs more than twice as much. It does not compare that favorably to my AquaQuest Safari, but if it did, Id just be more angry about the Safari than impressed with this(just a comparison to a 'real' tarp).
Its a bit heavy at 1.8lb, but its also a bit large at 10x12(only size I could find. Would be very impressed with this, in a 5x7 at ~$20). It appears put together well, but not precise, so it doesn't pitch very tight. However, being polyester, it also wont stretch and sag, like nylon. Even the camo pattern is surprisingly good and has great colors(will see if they last). Though, it does have a grey border that kinda compromises the camo. I chose camo as a courtesy to other hikers and nature lovers, not for serious concealment, so its not really a problem. If you're looking for functional concealment, you might consider the olive green tarp, or a different brand.
Unless it falls apart or leaks badly, Im going to predict that this is a good buy. Ill update after my first thorough field test, at 6 months and a year of heavy use. As it stands, it gets 3 stars, for being as advertised. If it lives up to first impressions, the price alone, will get a 4. We shall see if can rise to a 5.
1st Update: moderate thunderstorm last night. 15 minutes of ~35 - 45mph wind gusts and several hours of heavy rain.
It handled the rain flawlessly, with no leaks or sagging. The DWR is still working fine, but will doubtlessly require reapplication at some point.
One of the plastic tieout rings broke and some stitching on another tieout popped. I think it will be ok and its an easy fix. I think some reinforcement of the stitching will make a big difference, if you can sew. Ill upload pics, when I've done the reinforcement.
Update 1a: Stitching has held fast and DWR still at +80% - water no longer beads, but forms sheets that immediately recede with no surface wetness, when the rain stops. I removed all of the plastic tieout rings(cut them with scissors, to give an idea of how strong they are). This is a highly recommended immediate modification, because they absolutely, without question, WILL break and if it happens in wind and rain, it won't be a pleasant experience. The cloth loops are sufficient and are at no disadvantage to rings.
** Update
I purchased another camo pattern tarp, to keep in my car and it appears some upgrades and possible changes have been made. 1) The plastic grommets have been upgraded and though I haven't yet tested them, they appear to be sufficiently strong and lightweight(they also look better). 2) They have added a reinforcing stitch, to the perimeter tieouts, that should prevent them from tearing, under even harsh conditions. 3) The fabric is notably softer and the print is darker. I can't yet say how it performs, compared with the previous version. In all, these are good changes and show that they pay attention to customers. Ive added a 4th star, for this pleasant surprise.

This tarp is very high quality and versatile. This tarp will easily proved enough room for two people. It's or the lightest I have a different tarp for minimalist style camping althoug, packing this is completely doable in a hiking pack. The stakes are great quality not like the ones that come with most tents/tarps. I like how many connection points there are. (The connection points and size was my main reason I purchased it.). After purchasing the item I also noticed that the company is a smaller family owned business which I find appealing. If you enjoy tarp camping and want a larger size you won't be disappointed with this one. I will add pictures later. I have only been able to set it up in my garage so I could treat it and seal the seems. (I don't believe that's even necessary btw).
