A bit finicky to get started, but great controller with all the connectivity needed without the bulk

This is my go-to for simple devices to automate an actuator, just link it to your wifi and set a web server on it to control a device via serial com or via binary switches, or to monitor an sensor and report its value back to the client. Perfect for most applications. It works just like an arduino, you can even program it with the same IDE, except with arduino you need to add a bunch more stuff to go wireless, adding unnecessary bulk, expense, and wiring to things that should be much more compact. This is a great starting point for most projects. Make sure, however, that you understand well how to program it, it's not very forgiving on supply voltage or on the configuration needed to program it. It's worth buying a dedicated programming dock for it if you go this path. That will make your first purchase be about as expensive as an arduino plus wireless connectivity hat, however subsequent purchases will be much cheaper.
