Key features

  • An affordable, professional quality, wide body key of D whistle. The most popular Freeman whistle.
  • Rich full sound, beautifully in tune and well balanced across the octaves. Scroll (way) down to the reviews section for a video demonstrating the Freeman Tweaked Mellow Dog.
  • Pure-drop authentic traditional whistle that sounds and plays like a much more expensive instrument, better than the inexpensive mass produced whistles but still affordable. Many experienced players say the Mellow Dog is their favorite whistle, even compared to whistles costing much more.
  • Personally tweaked and voiced by Jerry Freeman (see description below for an explanation of all that's been done in the tweaking process to make this whistle great).
  • Great for beginners all the way to the most experienced professional players.
  • The Mellow Dog is especially good to learn on because it produces beautiful, clean notes easily, sparing the player the frustration of trying to work with a whistle that may be hard to play or doesn't produce clean sounding notes.

Great flexible whistle

My first whistle was a Feadog, and I'm not dissing the whistle, but for a beginner like me, it was very easy to overblow (squeakity squeak squeak) and I felt sad that I just...could not get the hang of it.

SO I thought, hey, maybe try a different whistle. So I got this and holy cow what a difference it makes! It's very easy to play and has a lovely voice--a lot less brassy and chiffy than the Feadog. The higher notes are a little harder to reach than the feadog, but they are there and they sound lovely. (Again, I'm a player who has been playing for about a month, so I'm well aware my technique needs refinement).

It's a lovely whistle, easy to play and with a lovely voice that sounds like birdsong on a foggy morning.

And bonus, after playing this for a while, I've gotten better at technique so I can go back to my Feadog and also make that one sing!
If you have a whistle that is making you sad and think you're bad at the whistle because it's so squeaky, try this one. You'll get your confidence, you'll make lovely music, and you'll be able to build your techniques. I highly recommend this for a beginner.
It's one mellow dog!

I love this whistle, my first for my new pastime of whistle learning and playing. I wanted to find a whistle that wouldn't break the bank, yet be better than entry level. This is just such a whistle. It's tweaked which I gather means that it's cobbled together from a couple of brands and it seems to be tuned spot on. Being new, I still blow a lot of clunky notes, especially in the higher octaves, but I can't blame it on the whistle.
Best Affordable High Whistle.

If you're interested in learning the high whistle, don't buy the cheapest thing out there and regret it. The Mellow Dog is affordable and easy to get in the States. It is tuned well, easy to play, and more forgiving of over-blow (perhaps even more so than my Killarney). The lows are sweet and the highs, while a bit breathier (and requiring a bit more breath) are easy to reach, with a little practice. This is a light but sturdy whistle, easy to take on a road trip. I store mine above the visor with a couple elastic loops to secure it. It has a slightly wider bore than some of the cheaper whistles, so it's got plenty of volume. Watch the Cutie Pie demo for the full scoop.
Perfectly tuned. Fun to play.

Now, what you get is the tubing from one whistle, presumably a Walton's Mellow D whistle, hence "Mellow"; and then you get the mouthpiece of a Feadóg whistle, hence "Dog".

After Jerry makes his tweaks, the whistle becomes much greater than the simple sum of its parts. As my title states, this whistle is ridiculously tuned, down to the 10Mhz tolerance according to my tuner, which is so painstakingly difficult to achieve on both octaves, I am thoroughly impressed that he was able to achieve this level of tuning.

The play of the whistle is unlike any of my others: it takes very soft pressure for all of the lower octave notes, and a surprisingly strong amount of force to cleanly reach the higher octave. I haven't experienced anything like this in the whistles I've played. I could almost describe it as an exponential ramp up, rather than a linear ramp up of pressure required. This is simply a characteristic of the whistle and has no bearing positively or negatively in any review or critiquing process, just a noteworthy mention of a unique trait. All whistles have them, and this is what makes each whistle unique in its own way, completely separate of sound.

Speaking of sound"¦.The raspy chiff of this whistle sounds heavenly to anyone looking for that traditional folksy tone and remains consistently present even at its highest note.

Overall, Mr. Freeman is truly a master of his craft and I am proud to say that I own one of these delightful creations. This is most definitely a whistle that any professional or amateur can appreciate and enjoy playing.
After three whistles, this is the one!

Like the others reviewers, I tried a couple of whistles but could never get those low notes without over blowing. Based on these reviews I ordered a Jerry Freeman. Right out of the box, which arrived quickly, I was able to comfortably play those low notes. Now I am really enjoying learning to play the tin whistle.
