I received it the same day I ordered it. I started by fully charging the batteries before use. The next day I familiarized myself with how it worked by using it to locate an underground wire that I knew the location of. After that, I used it to locate my underground telephone line using the instructions in the manual. I was able to follow the line from my house to the pedestal it came from. The manual hasn't been updated since it refers to 2 different models by their color and the one I received is neither color, it is Red. Everything else matches the model with the rechargeable battteries. I can't comment on the durability of it other than it physically looks as sturdy as any electic meter I have used and paid as much as $500 for.

This thing is a bit tricky to use and the instructions are not super clear. But with a little time fiddling it will allow you to find underground wires. I was looking for a 12AWG electrical wire and was able to locate it.
The machine is a little counter intuitive, you swing the sensor back and forth and the tone get louder as you get closer to the wire, then goes silent as you pass over the wire, then gets loud and starts to fade again as you get further. You are listening for the brief quiet moment inbetween the increasing sounds. The quiet spot is where your wire is. Once you get the hang of it, it works OK. Accuracy isn't great, but it should get you within a foot or so of the wire. I traced and marked a wire walking north, then turned around and traced the same wire going south and on the way back the marks were about 6" off.

Turned it on and used it without charge or reading any instructions. Hooked to dug up broken end of telco cable and stuck black clip in mud. Was able to follow cable at least 800ft. Should be mostly buried more than 18in deep. Some residual utility markings showed accuracy of device. I honestly thought I'd be returning it tomorrow. I need some way to find cable long after markings are gone. I need at least 1000ft of detection but should work as I discovered output power only about half for my first test. Caveat: there are no other cables within 20ft of this one, and none near the transmitter end.

Really locates cables, but signal is strong. I had it attached to one of the disconnected phase wires on a 4 wire cable in the outside house panel. Trying to locate underground cable to barn and find where one phase was broke. Both phases, neutral and ground wire to barn were disconnected at both ends. Man, while just attached to the phase wire, it had the signal on 3 other underground wires going in different directions, even the wire starting in the phone box 1ft from the panel.. I turned it down a little and figured the signal heading to the barn was it. Easy to follow. Loud tone on both sides of cable, closer loud static, on top of cable low level static. Couldn't locate where break was, but in my case (using a multimeter, the phase had a break, but was partially shorted to the ground and neutral) the partial short to neutral was throwing it off. Not the fault of the unit. If it would have been a clean break and no short it would have found it. You have to play with the output level and receiver volume to figure it out.
