Easy install, smell gone in a day
DCRapscallion✓ Verified Purchase•February 24, 2024
This was very easy to install - hardest part was splicing a power line and adding a box so that the outlet was close enough to the water heater for the power cord. Would have been nice to include a longer power cord so you wouldn't have to do that.
Apart from that, it's a 10 min install. My old anode rod was completely deteriorated so I added a magnesium one and got rotten egg smell. I switched to this and it eliminated the smell in a day. That said, so would have removing the magnesium anode rod, so there's no way for me to know that it's "working" per se, but I'm hoping it is helping to protect the tank. I guess only time will tell.

Solution for well water!

We have well water and deal with black junk in the hot water heater. As long as we use the hot water it stays clear but if we are gone for more than a day we need to run the hot water heater out to get rid of the black, sulfur smelling hot water.
We removed the original magnesium anode from the hot water heater as we were told that an aluminum anode rod would reduce the black skunky water. The aluminum anode helped but did not eliminate the black gunk in the hot water heater.
I had to try this powered titanium hot water heater anode when I read that it eliminates the well water black gunk in the water heaters.
Installation instructions were included. Made sure to turn off the hot water heater before installing!
Overall, installation was straight forward and easy. I used a battery powered impact wrench, this made removal of the old anode super easy!
After installation we drained the hot water heater and have not noticed any black, skunky water yet. So far so good!

Smelly Water

Powered anode rods are a great solution for anyone dealing with smelly hot water! These anodes supposedly work exactly the same as normal anodes do in protecting your tank, but they do not produce the same smelly results! This anode was easy to install after getting the old one removed, which can be difficult!! There are plenty of videos on line to watch to give you ideas on how to remove your stubborn factory anode.
Not just for water heaters...

So, this is obviously made for water heaters, and for that I'm sure it would be great, because it's a well put together piece of hardware. It's not why I got it, however.
Titanium is one of the few metals that doesn't dissolve easily in corrosive acids such as Aqua Regia. So it can be used as an electrode for things such as electroplating and electrochemical precious metal recovery, and electrochemistry, which is what I got this for.
What makes this great for this application is the round shape, which means I can use it easily in Erlenmeyer flasks or other places where a large, flat electrode simply won't work well. And the fact it has a tab for electrical hookup means all I have to do is slap a wire on it. Which is to say, its actually perfect for electrochemistry.
It comes with a 1.5 watt ac adapter to power it, which I likely won't use for my application but for water heater protection is perfect.
Whatever your application, be it water heaters or electrochemistry, this is a nice anode for either purpose, and I recommend it.

Impressed in several ways

I would recommend this based on the quality of the product.
Lets start with a simple disclaimer. there is no way for me to test and report on the long term claims of effectiveness of the product. I was skeptical about how this works but after doing some research it seems the process is legit.
I can tell you that the rod is surprisingly well built. the machining work is precision stuff. the titanium probe is epoxy potted perfectly into the stainless steel housing as far as I can tell. The power supply puts out just 1.2 watts. just a teensy amount of electricity usage. for me that means about 1000 hours of use for about 11 cents. pretty cheap to operate.
The included instructions were pretty darned good. anyone with basic home repair skills should have no problems doing the install. I would say if you can change a breaker, you can do this install with ease.
The only tip I would add to their instructions would be to make sure to completely fill the water heater afterwards before you turn the breaker back on. that way you don't burn out a heating element by trying to heat air in the tank. It happens. They mention this step, but not the importance of it.
