Good in general, poor specific seller
Grant Gliniecki•January 27, 2016
The product is great and definitely sturdy. The individual seller I got this from shipped it in a medium cardboard box with no padding, so I was shocked when I plugged it in and still worked. I only use basic Internet now because this delivers it reliably enough that I don't have to have absurdly fast internet.
Can't really tell

Unfortunately the unit that I received kept dropping its IP address frequently, about once every ten minutes. I verified that the problems originated with the cable modem rather than my computer or router. It also turned out to be hardware version 3, but was listed on a page for hardware version 4 devices (different DOCSIS specs). I returned the defective modem for a refund. It was labeled as "very good" condition, but had been obviously tampered with before. Theoretically, based on the specs, this is a very stable, solid cable modem for DOCSIC 1.1 and 2. Having owned various Linksys network gear I would think that a functional unit would be a stable, reliable cable modem. Make sure to get the hardware version listed as approved modems with your cable provider. Mine, for example, requires a rev4 device.
If this modem was "used" What does a new one look like?

I ordered a used BECMU10 modem as I couldn't pass up the price and the good reviews it received.(The rental from Comcast is 7.00 a month in my area.)
When I received it I couldn't tell it from new.
I followed the tips from other reviews and the installation was not a problem. However getting through to Comcast tech service to activate it took the best part of a half a day. When I finally got through it took 5-10 minutes to activate it.
The rental modem was a GE Surfboard that I replaced, and I checked the upload/download speeds before conversion. I then checked the new modems speed and found that there was no difference.
I've had it a month with no concerns. It should be noted that my modem is a version 2 ? (What was the big deal)
Considering cost vs. Rental you can't go wrong. I'm totally satisfied.

Perfect ... with an occasional reboot :)

This cable modem has been fantastic ... now and then (not often), the connections with my cable provider get outta whack, and all I do is pull the power out, wait 1 minute, plug it back in ... all is well when I reboot my PC, and off I go. Even corporate networks have issues with their ISP connections now and then, you're not buying a toaster you know. This cable modem is very solid ... I know, I've tried DSL a couple times, and you couldn't pay me too ... well, you know. This product works, and stacks with a linksys wireless router, and/or 16 port linksys router as well ... all brought to you by CISCO ... a (gasp) router company!
Cable modem

This is an excellent product for the Macintosh: absolutely perfect plug-and-play! You take it out of the box, connect it via ethernet, and you're good to go. Unless you're an absolute newk, there's no need to RTFM, even though, for the Mac user, the manual consists entirely of a couple of pictures. Also, for the Mac user, it's a reasonably good example of industrial design. It's great for use with the Apple AirPort SOHO / home-networking system. Moreover, for the Windows (attempting to be) user, the packaging shows the Windows ensign over the words, "Designed for Microsoft Windows ..." and contains the necessary cabling, plus a CD with a manual to supplement the picture-manual and a selection of drivers, of which more are available from the Linksys site. Linksys also sells the necessary internal piping, if it's not already built into your PC. For the price, this modem is an absolute steal.
