Not perfect, but seems an improvement over wooden gate
Jane Harris✓ Verified Purchase•November 5, 2017
The idea was to put in on the front of the step so the cat could escape our dog and go upstairs. But, the high lip on the bottom of the gate would be a tripping hazard for my feet, so it had to go against the back of the step which renders the cat gate not so useful. Also it seems my stairs are the perfect width (34 1/2 inches wide) to need an extension but 6" was just enough so that the lock would jam if I tried to use it. So, no extension. But big gaps on the side should be easy enough for the cat to use. Gaps are 4 /12 or 5 inches wide (not good for a toddler). Probably big enough for our lab to stick her head in, but she is a scaredy critter and I am hoping she won't try it. Seems sturdy enough even with the full extension, but I am not going to permanently mount it until we use it for a while to see how it holds up. I used Maisi pressure gate wall protectors (available on Amazon which also helped narrow the gap by adding thickness. If you read the directions and follow the instructions you should find it easy for one person to install. (I am a 70 yr old arthritic woman and did it myself.) No tools required except for the included hex wrench. Replaces a wooden baby gate which worked well but was a pain to use on the stairs while trying to carry stuff.
Great gate - one of a kind!

I love this gate! It was really difficult to find the exact gate we wanted. It had to be tall enough, it had to have the small pet door, and it had to be walk-through. We had to return a gate previously because it wasn't walk through. Finding this was such a relief and it has worked perfectly! You can open the pet door to open in or out, depending on your preference. It does take a little practice to get the latch, but I think that's a plus because as our son gets older, he won't be able to open it. We use it in a doorway and it fits perfectly. Our cat is about 11 lbs, and she fits through with no problem. Our dogs also get through, but we do have a unique situation there - we have a very tiny 5 lb chihuahua who can not only get through the door, but through a couple of the bars as well! However, it's only used to keep our son away from the stairs, so we're ok with that! I highly recommend this!
The gate was very easy to setup

I purchased this product about 3 weeks ago because we rescued a cat that had been abandoned. While the cat was recovering, we wanted to keep our dogs out of the room, but allow the other cats to hangout with the new cat, after his leg healed of course.
The gate was very easy to setup, you just set it in the doorway and screw the plastic caps until snug. Like the instructions say, there will be a big gap when you first put it in, once you set the bottom pieces to hold that in place, then start on the top pieces, you will notice the gap slowly going away.
The gate itself is very well made, I am not a big fan of the metal bar at the bottom of the door, something you need to watch out for and don't stub your toes. Other gates had the bottom all a part of the swinging gates, this one does not.
A piece of advice, always make sure you push the top down under the Red Clip. My husky is pretty smart and quiet the escape artist. She has broken out of those unbreakable metal crates when she was being crate trained. She saw how the gate was being opened and figured out that she just had to nudge the top up for the gate to come loose.
As for the cat door, this is where it gets interesting and why i didn't give it 5 stars. First, we noticed that our pudgy beagle was able to just walk right through it, I was hoping the cat door would be a bit smaller, like the ones you install in the door itself, the permanent ones.
The other reason, see video, is that we couldnt figure out how the husky was getting in the room after we ensured the latch was secure, until the other night.... Apparently, my full grown husky who is not as big as my Golden Retrievers, is able to just craw through the door. I could understand the beagle getting through, but a medium/large sized dog.
I just need to figure out how to make that hole a bit smaller. The gate itself comes with additional extensions pieces if your door is beyond the standard size, I am thinking of taking one of those pieces and securing it to the gate to reduce the size opening.
Overall, this is still a great product with a quick install. I highly recommend this, just not if your dogs is like my Husky or Beagle

Ignore the "gate is bent" reviews
Mike R.✓ Verified Purchase•December 8, 2016
Normally I do not write reviews, but due to some of the negative reviews on this gate, I feel the need to write one.
The "bent" reviews:
One of the biggest complaints that I have seen with this gate is that it is "bent." There is a reason for that, compression. In order for the gate to stay in place without drilling or permanent mounts, it needs compression. If the gate was not bent outwards, you would not be able to get it to stay in the open space you'd like for it to. Once the gate is in place, use the supplied hardware to tighten it enough that the "bent" parts will now be square. If done correctly, the door will not bind, but will open and close like it is supposed to.
The pet door:
I didn't know this when I bought the gate, but the pet door swings either way which is kind of nice. The only thing about the pet door is that if the gate is not level, the pet door will swing freely. We have two cats, one is about 8 pounds and the other about 20 pounds (he is on a diet now.) The 20 pound cat can fit through this door very easily, the opening is perfect.
The extensions:
The extensions for this gate are pretty nice. It comes with two different sizes that slide into either end of the gate. With the opening that we have the gate in, we only needed the larger extension.
This gate stays in place for us with compression only, we did not screw the pieces into the wall to hold it. We have a 70 pound Golden Retriever that the gate keeps out of the space where the cats need to go. If you push hard on the gate, of course it will move, but if if you use the supplied hardware, that won't happen. We do not need to worry about that though because or dog does not push on the gate.
We are very happy with the gate, especially for $25. The only thing that I'd change if I could is the actual opening of the gate. It's a little smaller than I'd like, but not enough for me to dock a star or even half of one.
If you know what you're doing, or have a little bit of common sense, you'll most likely agree that this is a great gate.

Cat door became irrelevant
K. Pierce✓ Verified Purchase•July 15, 2016
Good, sturdy gate. Easy to install, and fits well in our hallway. I got this to keep our hound retriever rescue pup from getting into the cats' food bowls and sneaking poop snacks from the litter boxes. I wanted the little cat door so that my fat Russian Blue would have no problems accessing his food and litter. It turns out, both the fat Blue and the 4 month old kitten can crawl through the sides with no issue and don't even use the cat door.
After having the gate about a week, the hound retriever pup (about 40 lbs at 6 months old) found out he can shimmy through the cat door if he works at it and tries hard enough. Now we just keep the little door shut since both cats can go around the gate. The pet door has become irrelevant. Still, I'm happy with this gate.
It is easy to open one handedly, even when I'm carrying laundry or coffee or fat cats.
