Outstanding Cheese Slicer - have had one for years and years
Rich✓ Verified Purchase•October 19, 2017
Outstanding Cheese Slicer. I have had one of these for years and years. Picked one up on a trip to Europe many years ago. So many years ago that my original model is marked "Western Germany" so you know that has been around a while!. The German name for this device is "Rollschnitt". After any years of use, the cheese-cutting wire broke. I was thinking about replacing that wire with a used metal guitar string. I have tried other rolling type cheese cutters and none worked as well as my original Rollschnitt. The cheese would stick to another model which had a big fat roller. With this cheese slicer the cheese is nicely sliced without having to pry pieces of cheese off the roller.
I did a search on Amazon for "rollshcnitt" and to my amazement this device came up. I ordered it and it arrived today. It is made by the same maker as my original rollschnitt. The handle on the new model is nicer and even better it is packaged with two replacement cheese-cutting wires! Otherwise the design seems to be identical to my old rollschnitt that worked so well for many years. I am happy that they didn't mess with a great design. Used it this afternoon, and it worked like a charm (as I expected it would). Wonderful device.

Thank you Westmark for making a quality handheld cheese slicer! We had an old handheld cheese slicer from my grandma that was probably 30+ years old and finally had to be replaced. I have purchased numerous handheld slicers over the past two years ranging from $3 to $25 and they were all fails due to the wire breaking after one use, having to get out a screwdriver to tighten the wire after each use, or the wire being so thick I couldn't even slice a sharp cheddar using two hands. We finally resorted to buying the cheapest slicer we could find three at a time and keeping them in the pantry as spares- sad. At one time we actually went through all three of them in a one month period! I was willing to pay any price for a decent slicer that would last for many years and I think we found it. After reading numerous reviews I purchased this Westmark slicer and followed the advice of several users to hand wash and dry it immediately. We have owned it approximately four months now and use it probably every other day to slice sharp cheddar. The wire on this slicer is thin, sturdy, and tight. We have not had one issue with the wire loosening or breaking. I highly recommend this product if you are looking for a solid handheld cheese slicer that cuts through even firmer cheeses with ease.
For ME? I'd buy it again, but see my remarks.

I really liked this product because it did what it was supposed to do very well. Then I made the mistake of letting someone else cut the cheese, and they promptly broke the wire. "Too many cooks..." and all that. If it were MY kitchen alone, and I was the only cook, I'd buy another, but practical sometimes has to make way for obvious. Face it, not everyone can even use a hammer properly. For me? Outstanding product, "just like Grandma's", but Grandma also told you to "keep your hands off my kitchen tools". Replaced this product with a similar item that has an easily replaced wire (in fact, comes with spares). I'd buy another one, but the sad truth is that other people THINK they can cut the cheese, but sadly, they just weren't trained well.
Solid construction but the roller coating comes off

This cheese slicer feels like it will last much longer than any other I've owned. The wire is strong and solid and it cuts well. However, after just a few weeks of using it, the coating on the roller is coming off. The way I noticed was it was putting grey marks on the cheese as I sliced it (pictured). I probably wouldn't buy it again.
Westmark Cheese Slicer - simple and good

Finally found a simple non-adjustable cheese slicer! I hate the big and clunky adjustable types that don't stay set at a particular thickness. I grew up with a simple slicer like this Westmark. No adjustability which is fine by me. The wire and roller are held by pressed in pins. This may help the wire have a long life since the wire raps around a nice radius and goes along side the pins.
You can adjust the thickness a bit with the just by the angle at which you hold the slicer to the cheese.
Had the Westmark cheese slicer a few weeks so I'll have to update if it ever breaks. The cutting wire and pins may be stainless but the handle looks like cast aluminum.
8/2017: Still works great - no broken wire.
