The product does claim to hold actual books; however, the length is quite small, so consider how long your books are when open. I tested this product with very average size books (for adults, not children - so that might be the problem). You do have to use your hands most times to hold the book open unless you are midway through the book, have snuggly tucked the pages in the bottom crease of the pyramid, and have somewhat broken the book's spine. For me, with very weak, arthritic hands, I need a bookrest that can hold the book, preferably open, without the help of my hands - I'm lucky enough to turn the pages.

I read a lot of hardback books that can become quite heavy when reading for a long time. I was using a sofa pillow for support, but that did not provide the right angle for reading. This smart design provides the perfect support and reading angle while also being quite attractive. I had seen this design for many years and finally decided to purchase. SO COOL...holds Kindle nicely and stays on knees with that broad base so much better for the distance away from eyes that is needed! Two pockets for pens, glasses, bookmarks, etc. LOVE the attached-at-top beautiful cording with attached end tassel to also use as a bookmark. Purchased the beautiful sage that goes with the master bedroom spread and drapery decor and can blend in many rooms in the house. The variety of colors is wonderful. These are SO well-made and a very good size with some wgt to them to sit still and truly support your reading material. Paperbacks will still need holding open, and hardcover naturally will depending on the book, but this holder will take more of the SUPPORT wgt and sit on your lap, legs, other surfaces right where you need it to stay put for your correct visual comfort! Have wanted one of these for a long time, finally bought it for myself. It works equally well with a book or a screen. A great idea, wish I had treated myself much sooner. The bottom rolled edge is too deep; when I would place my table there it would fall in to the little gap and make the very bottom of the touch screen inaccessible. Also the rolled edge was a lot firmer than I was expecting and it made adjusting it very difficult. Finally because the base is so firm, I could never get a suitable angle for using the pillow to prop the book up when I was partially reclined. It seems like it would be a bit more useful if there was some squishy adjustable padding on the bottom, and if it was more of a rectangle than a square.
