Last fall, Hurricane Matthew passed us, leaving us without power for five days. During that time, we were out of touch with the outside world, for the most part, left with sketchy cell phone service (and no really good option for charging our cell phones). Now that we're coming back into hurricane season, we decided that the Kaito radio would be a good option for us. It hasn't disappointed! So far, everything works as advertised.
We hope we never NEED to use it, but it's great to know we have it in the event that we do!

There were so many things I was looking for in a weather radio. This does everything I need/want it to do and more!! I was so impressed with the radio. My husband even complimented me on the purchase!

The price is too much for this radio, but then everything is too expensive now.
In the one use of this product, the crank works to generate power, but it is plastic, so do not crank on it like you are a 300 pound gorilla.
Reception was very good and the speaker is clear, which is the main feature in radio performance in it has to gather signal and then have a speaker to convert that signal clearly.
For a light, emergency radio, that you do not store batteries in it to destroy it, and to test it once a year, this is a good product for people who this will be a big investment. Just use common sense in knowing you are not getting a 250 dollar radio and treat it with the reality that if you break it, that you can listen to yourself talk in the cold and dark, and it is about as good as you can expect to put your hope in and then be disappointed.

Kaito Voyager new and defective. Customer "service" condescending

I purchased two Kaito Voyager emergency radios for $50 each. One was given as a gift and I kept the second for myself. I kept my radio stored in the box and just opened it today. I turned the tuning dial and heard a crack. The frequency marker would not move. The radio is now unusable and that is really sad because I loved the appearance and supposed functionality. I am including photos of the QC sticker (what a joke!) and the broken tuner bar. I contacted Kaito by phone and the representative was not interested in replacing the product. I have written customer service and will update developments here.
UPDATE: The good news is that I received a prompt response from the Kaito email contact. The bad news is that I received an unprofessional and condescending response which I will share here. Botton Line; Completley check out your product immediately and know that purchasing from this company can be a crap shoot!

Got this handy device due to living on the east coast of Florida and hurricane Matthew making me pucker up and sweat. I forgot about hand crank radios and flashlights (which this is both and more) until a friend of mine asked if I had one and was baffled that I didn't already. This thing has everything! Makes you wonder if Doc Brown from Back to the Future or MacGyver works for Kaito. Picks up my local radio, weather and shortwave radio bands with no issues. (Now I can eavesdrop on truckers) Even sounds good. The LED light is pretty bright and the reading light is a good mix of not too bright yet not too dim. The red S.O.S. blinking light doesn't pattern actual Morse code, but who the heck can read Morse code anyways. (Pipe down military vets) It charged up perfectly with the solar panel and hand crank. And the hand crank is easy to turn. Even after consuming all your alcohol during a hurricane party so it doesn't get warm and spoil when the power goes out. And now for the answer that most people are probably curious about...(long pause for effect)... it DID charge my iPhone 6. Nothing spectacular but approximately 2% every 5 minutes. The great thing is if your phone needs more juice then just crank the sucker up. So to make a long story...err...review short...the Kaito Voyager KA500 got me through a hurricane and I would definitely recommend it.
