Its a great design, but the construction isn't good
Amazon CustomerOctober 26, 2016
Its a great design, but the construction isn't good, the wood/construction is cheap and the overall build is very flimsy. Only a simple screw keeps the legs extended and this fails all the time (i.e. it will collapse without warning into a pile onto the floor) A gentle breeze will topple it instantly. Use with care!
Great easel, still in use after 4 years

Bought this for my niece and nephew to share in 2011. It has held up to their use. It is more stable and less rickety than a different brand one we bought for our daughter around the same time. If had one complaint it would be that the first few times the kids used it, they couldn't unfold it without adult help. It came with paints and supplies inside the easel and they were of average to above average quality. Would purchase again, but hopefully it will get handed back down to our younger kiddos when the niece and nephew outgrow it.
Disappointed

I ordered a Jack Richeson FULL BOX style Easel in Dec 2014. I just opened the box today to start using it. I found to my dismay that it was not a full box easel, but a half box (OR LESS) easel. In addition a loose screw fell out of the center leg, which will not lock as i believe it should. Product was made in China and is poorly made.
Well worth the purchase price.

There are some criticisms that this easel is not sturdy and that the legs collapse. I have found that this is easily remedied by tightening the wing nuts by hand as tight as you can and then take a pair of pliers and make one more turn on them. The reason they loosen up is because the wood contracts and expands with the heat and moisture in the atmosphere. This causes the wing nuts to loosen over time. I have not had the problem at all with this method.
I love this easel and it more than meets my needs for a easily transportable easel.
If you are looking for a heavier easel, I would suggest a "studio style" easel, but you will pay much more for it.
Good for the price, and my purpose.

I bought this for my wife who hopes to get into painting, and ordered it thinking that I'd have a task assembling it. Despite the lack of instructions it was pretty easy and took me all of 10minutes. I imagine the bits that may have given people trouble is the hidden latches that hold all the bits in place while in its 'compact' form. I'd reccomend setting the unit down on a table with the bits for holding the prospective painting face-down. Then pop out the legs and after turning it right-ways-up (and setting it on the floor) unfold the remainder of the easel. It's no high-end piece of furniture, but it looks like it'll do fine.
