What a fine functioning and sturdy-built device this is
RockLassJuly 16, 2017
What a fine functioning and sturdy-built device this is. Enameled steel construction and a little wire stay-cool handle to move it around the stove top. Good strong magnet to attach the unit to the stove pipe if that's what you'd like to do. Somebody was thinking soundly when they designed and produced this. Way to go!
Does what it is supposed to do.

Seems to work just fine. It appears accurate enough. I have an Ecofan that begins turning at about 180 degrees. The thermostat seems correct when the fan starts, so it appears accurate enough to get an idea of how hot I'm burning. I was on the cool side so this is helping me regulate the stove better. Not trying turn burning wood for heat into rocket science. I like my stove for the simplicity of it to begin with. This does the trick.

This one is very nice. It works well and lets me feel confident that I am keeping the my fireplace insert at the temperature that it needs to be. I have changed the way that I use the insert since I have gotten this thermometer. Recently I checked the top of the stack after I had a fire going for a few hours and keeping it in the best zone. Temperature at the top of the stack was around 250 deg F, safe zone for creosote.
The Inferno is a USA made product, steel construction with a wire bail for removal. Magnet works good and its easy to read. If it ever stops working I would buy another.
If you don't have a surface thermometer for your wood stove this is a great item and in my opinion a great choice.
Went from 2 stars to 4 stars after laser testing.

UPDATE: After purchasing a laser temp gauge I found that this thermometer is fairly accurate after all. It comes within 50 degrees of the laser so I'd say its pretty accurate. I've revised my rating to 4 Stars based on the new testing. NOT ACCURATE! I wanted to upgrade from the Rutland I purchased to a more easily readable one from a distance. I went with the Inferno based on the reviews, but they were not at all what I expected. After The first use the Inferno was 150-200 degrees hotter than the Rutland. I figured my older Rutland must be way off so I thought I'd test them. I tested both of these units in a electric oven and the Rutland was right on, at 300, 350, and 450. The Inferno registered 150 degrees hotter! The Rutland I have now was a replacement for the same model that got dented when I bumped it with a cast iron kettle (it worked but looked banged up so I wanted a new one). Even dented the two Rutlands read the same side by side. I'm very disappointed with the Inferno since the quality seemed very good, but the performance was way off. I'm shocked at the difference and uploaded a pic side by side to show the difference (200 degree difference is crazy). I would not recommend this product.
A useful tool to help you burn efficiently & safely

Bought this to replace a Rutland brand thermometer for a mid-sized fireplace insert. I have 7 years experience with this fireplace insert, so I've learned how to best burn with it. The Inferno model seems to more smoothly follow the increases and decreases in temperature compared to the Rutland. The Rutland would stick on a temperature temporarily, then suddenly jump up 50-100 degrees in an instant. So the Inferno makes it easier to anticipate the progression of a fire cycle. On my particular fireplace insert (Jotul Kennebec) with the Inferno at a top front center location, the best burns happen when the Inferno is right at the boundary between "Best zone" and "Too hot" or even slightly hotter. So rather than blindly following a temperature reading on a thermometer, from my experience it's more important to learn from trial & error how your particular insert or wood stove burns best, then use a thermometer product like this one to keep it in that sweet spot, regardless of what the thermometer's reading happens to be. In my case, the Jotul insert's best burn range registered at least 50 degrees cooler on the Rutland than for this Inferno product. But once I discovered that, this product is just as useful as the Rutland ever was.
