We tried the garbage bag and multiple rubber band approach, this is SO much better.

I was in a car accident a couple of weeks ago and suffered a displaced calcaneal fracture - which means surgery and different cast variations during the healing process. In the emergency room, they put a half cast with a splint on me until I could see the podiatric surgeon. My first shower after the accident, we tried the garbage bag and multiple rubber band approach. I could get that easily over the cast and splint; however, it unfortunately did not keep my leg 100% dry. I immediately went on Amazon to research available solutions and found this.
By the time I received it, my surgeon had put me into a compression bandage and soft cast in preparation for surgery. I was a bit concerned, because there weren't any hard layers protecting my broken and still painful heel, but I was able to easily get this on, pulling it wide enough to clear my injured heel without touching it (which would have caused much pain). It fit very snugly to my leg and kept my whole leg dry - no water got in. We were just as careful taking it back off - I was able to get it back over my heel without hurting it.
After my surgery, the doctor put me in an even bigger and thicker splint and soft cast ensemble. This was a real test of getting the shower sleeve on and off my leg without hurting anything. It was a struggle, but I REALLY stretched the mouth of it so I could clear the splint. Even with all that stretching, it remained snug to my leg and kept everything dry in the shower. Taking it back off was a challenge, but I was able to stretch it wide enough.
By the way, this is the shower chair my fiance bought for me so I didn't have to try and balance on one leg, holding on to the wall (a recipe for disaster): Bath and Shower Seat with Back. We needed it right away, so he ran out and purchased it at WalMart. It is very sturdy and one of its best features is the ability to adjust the legs to make it level and secure on a curved shower floor.
I am looking at a long recovery time, so I am going to need this waterproof cast and bandage protector for at least a couple of months. It appears to be solidly made and hopefully it will last for the duration. If it doesn't I will definitely buy another one.

After my wild child broke his arm, I broke his heart by telling him that he couldn't stay and play his beloved Dinos vs Submarines in the bath. Even though I'd wrapped his little cast in about 673 layers of cling wrap, 3 trash bags, more cling wrap, and some Press n Seal (just for good measure, ya know) I was terrified that some water might still seep in and.... what? Make it smell? Degrade the cast? Enable the growth of a super-bacteria that would turn his arm into a necrotic cesspool requiring immediate amputation? I don't know, I just know the doc said not to get it wet.
So anyways, fast forward to me coming across this little gem. AH-mazing. The material is a thick vinyl- think of a super thick shower curtain. The top Has a tight, wide band that's super stretchy. It was small enough to stay tight on his arm, and I have no doubt it would fit mine if I needed it, too.
This sucker survived 6 weeks of baths with my 5y/o and still looks brand new. Unless you take a knife to it or toss it in the blender or something, no water is getting through.

This has made it so much easier to get a shower with my broken arm.

I broke my left wrist a few weeks ago and was looking for a product so I could take a shower. This is an excellent product for anyone who needs to keep a limb dry due to a cast, wound or any other reason.
The product works by having a small hole that your limb goes through with stretchy rubber around it. That's attached to a bag that your limb sits in. It does take 2 people (my husband and I) to get this on my arm. One person could do it for a leg, but an arm is a 2 person job since the user only has one good arm to use. I think even with a leg 2 people would be handy just to stretch the hole bigger. My husband and I stretch it with our hands opening it in 3 areas, like a triangle. It gives me more space to get my arm in it.
I'm not a large person and it's fairly tight. It needs to be too keep it from having any gaps that water could get through. Overall, it's be a lifesaver! I'm thrilled that I found this, that is reusable and that it works so well. Highly recommended!

So much better than trash bags and tape.

I am no weight bearing after a broken leg and ankle surgery. I had a cast and now a splint again after the surgery. I have used it three times now on both a cast and a splint and it hasn't leaked a bit. We have wrapped a towel around the splint just to minimize any condensation and potential leaks but the towel isn't ever wet. I let the water run right down onto my leg too. I do need help getting it on (you have to pull the gasket wide) and I can't get it over the splint myself. If I pull one side and my help pulls the other, it goes on quickly and easily. Maybe as I heal I will be able to do it myself. When done, we just hang it in the shower to dry for a day and then put it away until the next use. I agree with other reviewers that this thing smells bad but that is a small price to pay. Although I am only three uses in, I don't see any signs of it not lasting me through the life of my injury. I also got a delta adjustable tub transfer bench and what a difference they make...without them I had pretty much resigned myself to not showering for over a week (yucky thought and sponge baths are only so effective) because it was such a difficult and cumbersome process. I have no problem showering regularly now.
Keeps the cast and bandage totally dry.

Perfect to keep the foot dry.I bought this for my husband who had his ankle fused and he cannot have his foot wet for a while until the stitches heal. He is a big man (6'1") and his shoe size is 12, consequently the boot cast he has on is big. This bandage protection goes in tightly around the shoe area. The leg part is ok but it would have been nicer if the foot area were wider. It does prevent water from getting in but it would have been nicer to have a size a little wider to accommodate his boot easier. Other than that, I have been helping him shower with absolutely no problem at all!
