Working Well for Light-Weight, Small Jobs
Seattle Sue✓ Verified Purchase•August 17, 2023
The blade on this grass sickle is stamped out to shape the metal. That is an indication that it is not especially hard or strong. Some of the other reviews show how theirs have failed because of that.
The teeth are sharp when first received. I have been using this tool to help remove grass around other plantings. The blade does a good job of cutting through grasses if I grasp with one hand and hold this sickle in the other hand to cut. It will cut through a large bunch that I could not cut with shears. The shape of the curve allows me to cut very close to the ground. The serrations make easy work of cutting. Using a lighter touch might save it from breaking.
The shape works well for right-hand use. It is awkward to use left-handed.
For clearing large areas, other tools would be better.

Best tool in my shed!

This is a fantastic tool. Everytime I use it I ask myself how I ever got along without it. It's super for: cutting off handfuls of old ferns, spent perennials...by the bushel, shrub roses that used to take me hours to prune now can be done in about 1/3 the time. I maintain my garden of over an acre and this really helps me get 'we done. Price is great. I would give it five stars but it's not as strong as I wish it was, and yes it's lost a few little teeth BUT for the price, ease of use & convenience, I'll buy one racy year as needed.
Very handy, easy to use.

Perfect for thinning / cleaning heliconia, bromeliads, gingers and the like.
Had HEAVY damage in my tropical garden caused by hurricane Irma. Great for getting in and around the bases to take plants to the ground for revival. That's just for starters - very handy tool. Great price.
Have used a shorter version for years. Like this one even more.
******UPDATED REVIEW*****
After one day of cutting tool lost a good 1/3 of its teeth. Poor quality cutting tool.
I DO NOT recommend this tool.
For the real thing check into Barnel Cutting Tools. Been using one of their blades for years. After buying this blade I went back to Barnel and found the long handle and short handle versions and purchased both from Sears online. The quality is night and day while the prices are not very different.

This is a great garden tool. Super sharp and lightweight it allows you to clear stubborn weeds without injury to nearby plants or harvest cleanly. Give this to your favorite gardener.
Excellent for trimming back ornamental grasses.

In the spring the ornamental grasses I have are like straw. They need to be cut back close to the ground for the new growth and this sickle is handy for accomplishing this. I grab a clump of grass above where I want to cut and then draw the sickle across. This only gives a handful of grass, but it is convenient for transferring directly to a trash can. If you use a scythe or hedge trimmer, the cut is faster but the collection process can be difficult. Wearing gloves is recommended because you could easily take off a finger if you accidentally hit the hand that's holding the grass.
This sickle also allows you to cut close to the ground in a precise way.
