DEFY Crystal Clear Composite Deck Waterproofing Sealer, 1 Gallon

Key features
- •WATER-BASED, CLEAR COMPOSITE DECK SEALER - This environmentally friendly, water based, clear wood and deck sealer protects composite wood from the harmful effects of the sun, while adding little to no change to the natural look of your composite deck.
- •FORTIFIED WITH ZINC NANO-PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY- It's like sunscreen for your wood. Tiny zinc particles dispersed throughout the stain reflect damaging UV rays, preventing premature graying and color loss.
- •EXTREMELY DURABLE, HIGH QUALITY RESINS - DEFY Composite Deck Sealer is made with the highest quality resins available that have better resistance to fading and darkening. The result is a quality sealer that typically lasts a season or two longer than competitive products.
- •ENHANCED MILDEW RESISTANCE - The same zinc nano-particles that block damaging UV rays are also a natural deterrent to mold and mildew growth.
- •EASY TO MAINTAIN - When it's time to do a maintenance coat, there's no need to strip the surface. Make sure the surface is clean, then apply a single maintenance coat of DEFY Composite Waterproofing Sealer.

Regarding the photos:
Before - Tan/Brown
During - Wet
After - Slightly Cedar/Red (The original color)
I had to rebuild and replace portions of my 15 year-old deck. I also installed new posts, sleeves, railings, and facia. Anyway, the composite decking is still in great shape, but it was faded. I was going to use a tinted sealer, but the reviews were inconsistent. I used this Defy sealer three years ago, and I was satisfied with its performance. I knew what to expect.
My deck is approximately 300 square feet including the steps. After thoroughly pressure washing the decking, I used 1.5 gallons of Defy to do one coat. Doing a second coat may be a waste of time, because in my experience, the product repels itself when it fully dries. Lay it on generously while it's wet. You'll know if it's enough.
I used a long handle and a 9", 3/8" nap roller cover.
You don't really paint it on, you push on. That's why by it's so easy to do. Dip the roller in the tray like you do when you paint. Make a puddle of sealer and push it onto the decking (a 9" roller spans across the width of 1.5 planks on my deck). I pushed the sealer the of the length planks until the puddle was gone, and dipped the saturated roller back in tray and repeated. Then, I back-rolled the wet areas to make sure everything was covered. FYI: I did cut in with a paint brush and a small microfiber roller. I noticed that the cut-in areas came out slightly darker than the rest of the deck. It doesn't look bad though. It dries to touch from 30 min to a couple hours. To be safe, let it dry overnight before you put your furniture back on the deck. I believe the instructions say 12 hours.
I finished the deck last week. It has rained for several days this week, and the sealer is doing its job. You'll know it's working, because the deck will have water beads and puddles on it after it rains.

My Trex deck is only about a year and a half old but it gets used hard. This spring when cleaning it I had a hard time getting it clean. I tried scrubbing, outdoor cleaners, and pressure washing it. All three methods looked good while wet but then dried to still looking dirty and worn. Then I found this product. My deck looks better than new. It brought back the nice dark color and covered what I thought was dirt and grime. The best part is it helps prevent new messes dirty paw prints and shoe marks hardly show up and are easy to clean if they do. Right now I am unsure about the durability and longevity of the sealer but even if I have to do it once a year it was so easy to apply I will be happy to.
