Crazy wicked suction in a tiny package

Day 1 review. We picked this up to replace our Kenmore canister. We were pretty happy with the KM as it had a lot going for it so I'll be comparing the pros and cons of the Dyson against it. I'm a fan of canister vacuums. I grew up with a giant heavy upright Kirby vacuum that I hated. Canisters are just more convenient and powerful in my opinion.
The Dyson beats the KM on suction. Crazy wicked suction. We vacuumed our whole house. Combo of tile, hardwood, area rugs and carpet. It picked up a ton of crud and I didn't notice a loss in suction as a few reviewers had mentioned. We also read a lot about this vacuum being really difficult to use on carpet. The reviews made it sound like it took (a lot) of effort. This was the biggest and most common complaint we read and I just don't see it being a deal breaker issue. Our KM had an electric beater bar on it that this vacuum lacks. It has an air induced agitator that works okay but does take more effort and passes on carpet. Again, not at all a deal breaker. My eight year old son could run it just fine.
The KM's power switch is also located on the handle which was incredibly convenient. I found myself trying to power the Dyson on/off on several occasions and instantly missed the feature.
Make sure your garbage can is at least half empty. The latch to hold the bottom canister seal is really lacking and seems like a weak point. The third time I detached the canister to empty it, the bottom popped off and puked all the contents onto the vacuum and floor. Irritating, but so is buying/changing bags. The fix was slapping the canister back on and 10-15 seconds of running the vacuum to recollect. Make sure to hold the lid when detaching the canister...
The hose and wand on the KM was higher quality. It was high grade rubber and metal. The wand extended and retracted effortlessly. The Dyson takes some effort and feels closer to a cheap $100 Walmart vacuum. It isn't of course but in comparison to the KM, the Dyson is lacking. Attachments have tight tolerance and require more attention when connecting. This will probably get easier with more practice but will never be as easy as the KM.
Attachments on the KM also stored within the canister body. Very handy but the "lids" to cover them were flimsy and took some abuse over the years. The Dyson has no storage at all so... problem solved, I guess?... I'll have to find a good spot to keep them.
The self righting canister is pretty cool and works but we never really had much of an issue with our KM tipping on us so at this point it seems kind of gimmicky. The Dyson is more compact though. I see this helping a lot when carrying up and down stairs especially while vacuuming.
The Kenmore's design and engineering was more well rounded and time tested. It was balanced and spread throughout the whole unit. The Dyson's design and engineering is invested heavily around the compact vortex suction canister and innovative new features. The trade-off seems to be that certain necessary features suffer to keep the price in line.
Final verdict, it's a pretty damn good vacuum. After reading all that, you may be thinking I miss my Kenmore and in some ways I do. But the Dyson really has a lot going for it too. All in all, I think this Dyson is better suited to our house and lifestyle and we'll be happier with it in the long run.

This is my third Dyson. My first died but managed to give me a good 10 years of fantastic cleaning. Our second is still running very well. We keep that one for the main floors but I got this one because of it's length of handle and it has little more maneuverability in tight places like my car. It really does well getting dust bunnies in the corners of my ceilings, behind my fridge, between cracks and any tight corner! Definitely a good purchase and value for money!
