Works well with the T-Mobile network. We had some problems getting the phone properly set up. It turns out that spare the SIM card we had did not work. After talking with tech support, she sent us to the T-Mobile store to get a new SIM card. They activated the SIM card right there, installed it and the phone turned on and worked. The staff at the store were fascinated by the phone.
Just an FYI. The phone used a large SIM card. T-Mobile (and I think everyone else) currently use 3 different sizes of SIM cards.
The second button on the right side has an odd red icon. This is actually the on-off button that needs to be held down for several seconds to start up the phone. NOTE: there is also an on-off switch in the battery compartment next to the SIM card that needs to be turned on.
The instructions that came with the phone are worthless and seem to be written for a different phone. There are some appropriate warnings, but was not helpful for actual operation or setup (except the instructions to charge the phone before doing anything else).
There is text messaging and a phone book that can store info either on the SIM card or phone (I have no idea of capacity). The phone works just like the normal desk phone it looks like. Pick up the receiver and you hear a dial tone and can punch in the number you are calling. I am pretty sure you can use other methods for dialing but I haven't tried any yet, nor have I tried the speaker phone.
We got the phone for my 98 year old father who is technology averse. The perfect phone for him would look like an old "Bell Company" rotary phone, but this is a pretty good second or third best.

Great back-up phone.

Works well with an AT&T GoPhone SIM card, so now we can use this as an emergency back-up for 10 cents / minute. Quite happy with this purchase.
Great value for money
