Overall it's a very good beginning for kids to start music composition

Online music output could be a little improved and even add more instruments. Overall it's a very good beginning for kids to start music composition.

Kids never got in to it. The concept is more appealing to parents than children.
Great educational gift

My grandson loved this. He plays piano and is 10 yrs old.
Could be great, but isn't yet

I think this game has great potential, but they didn't achieve that potential. Here's what I don't like:

1. The only options for playing music are marimba, orchestra, or orchestra plus marimba. Why not include other instruments like piano, guitar, etc?
2. You can only compose four lines of music at once.
3. You have to physically type in the numbers - it would be better if you could scan them with your smartphone camera.
4. There isn't an app. You have to use the desktop version of the program which does not play nicely with devices. Who wants to open up their big clunky laptop when playing on the floor with kids? It seems cheap to not have developed a really user-friendly app to accompany the game.
5. This one will not matter to most people, but it bothers me - in order to create music with the program, you must agree to license it under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC 4.0 license. I'm a big fan of the Creative Commons, but licensing any work should be the choice of the creator, not mandated by the company who made the toy. A CC-BY-NC license essentially means that you are granting reuse for noncommercial purposes as long as you are credited. CC licenses are irrevocable. When I buy a pack of crayons I'm not forced to license anything I draw under a particular license - I think ThinkFun is overstepping its bounds by forcing creators to license work a certain way. We already paid you for the toy, you don't own what we do with it.
