A Sheath Built Old World Tough For Your Large Heavy Iron Axe
Impalex✓ Verified Purchase•September 16, 2023
This leather sheath is exactly what I was looking for, well except for the fact that in a perfect world I'd have been able to find a sheath that also had an incorporated leather boot for the pick end of my "True Temper Kelly Standard Kelly Works" 6Lbs axe head. It's a classic fireman's axe. This one is particularly old and scarred/pitted up, which I love. I'm not even sure they make this size axe anymore so I'd say my chances of finding a sheath that covers the front blade and the back pick of the axe are pretty slim. Lord knows I spent a lot of time hunting for one on the internet.
The sheath arrived with the 1/8" thick leather sections built into a satisfyingly stiff construction, with tightly crimped (stainless steel?) fasteners. There's a 3rd strip of the 1/8" leather sandwiched inside the front and back panels of the sheath, this is for the blade endge to rest on, preventing the blade from making any contact with the fasteners. I even like that the sheath has a heat stamped (or otherwise pressed in) logo on the pretty side. The logo is attractive, in my opinion.
On my axe the cutting/chopping blade is 5.25" long and it is hard to find a nice sheath/scabbard to fit over it, even more so with a belt long enough to wrap around the handle and reach back around to buckle tight.
My axe is in the photos with the sheath installed. The axe is not finished yet (I'm working on it as a Christmas gift for my youngest brother) so the handle hasn't been permanently installed yet but I mocked it up to test the reach of the sheath's belt and it will fit. It will only be able to buckle down into the last 1 or 2 holes, or maybe eventually into the last 3 holes (because leather stretches), but that's perfect for me.
I do plan to coat the sheath in the old blacksmith paste recipe of beeswax/turpentine/boiled-linseed oil but other than that (a purely optional step) this sheath is good to go right out of the box. Incredible price, as far as I'm concerned.
I highly recommend it.

Worth the $

I ordered this cover for an axe not made by the manufacturer of this brand, however the size was correct and it is not only functional but well made. I would buy another if I come across another axe without a cover for it.
New sheath works - great customer service

Just received the sheath in the mail today. I bought it for a used Kelly Works Woodslasher ax that did not come with one. When I received the item, I peeled off the UPC sticker from the leather, which removed the finish. I thought it wasn't a big deal, since it wasn't going to look pretty being used in the woods anyway and I could always refinish the leather. Then I put the sheath on the ax for the first time and it fit like a glove, I was initially impressed. When I tried to fasten the buckle for the first time, the buckle came right off at the rivet where it meets the leather. I sent it back for a refund.
Update: The owner, Spencer, contacted me and insisted the sheath I received should not have passed quality control and was not the norm. So the sheath was exchanged quickly and the new one works as advertised. Since my ax blade was 3 3/4 inches tip to tip, NOT taking into account the curve of the blade, the small size fit like it was specifically designed for my ax. Spencer also said the UPC sticker is an Amazon process and they are considering shipping the sheaths in bags. The only issue I still see with sheath is there is no welt protecting the blade from the rivets. However, if you don't jam the ax in there or don't swing it with the sheath on, I don't think there will be any damage. What really impressed me was the company's willingness to stand behind their product and correct my issue with the buckle. I think this is truly rare these days. Great customer service!

This is a durable, attractive and perfectly sized sheath for an axe blade. I ordered a small, as I wanted to fit it on a Fiskars Pro 8lb IsoCore axe, and as you can see it fits flawlessly. I have no fear it will come loose, and it will serve to protect both the blade and my hands for, most likely, many years. I would buy again, and you should buy it too.
Consistent Quality

The leather is thick, the stitching and riveting is precise and the range of sizes will fit the majority of axes. What more could you axe for?
