Works similar to an older pole I had. If you don't tighten the sections you can fold in in your hand when you don't need it, and release it and have it spring back to shape when you do. The shock cord keeps it together fine as long as your not in soft snow or mud. If you are you can tighten it.

Great product but one caveat. There is no warning on the telescoping extension until the VERY END thus , by the time you realize you are at the end, there is a very good chance of over-extending which is exactly what happened. I got it back in but now the extension is jammed. This could easily be remedied by moving a warning lower on the extension. Other than that, no issues and would rate a 4 star.

These are my first set of hiking poles, so I have little to compare them to. That said, I'm impressed with their stability. You extend these to the height of your liking, lock them in, and they don't move! They're a very solid design, rugged, and after 50 miles of hiking, the pads are showing little signs of wear.
