I would not recommend putting a plant directly in the bottom
Jennifer L Meunier✓ Verified PurchaseApril 18, 2018
I bought this with the sole intention to have my own tomatoes (obviously). I bought 4 plants to put in here, two tomatoes and two peppers. In the first few weeks, one tomato plant and one pepper plant completely died. I followed the instructions of watering a gallon a day, which honestly I think is what killed them. I would not recommend putting a plant directly in the bottom, as it gets SOAKED at all times. However, the surviving plants are doing great. I've watched my tomato plant get bigger and stronger every week. I have struggled with the back and forth weather, which I think everyone in the US is dealing with, but I am excited for consistently warm weather and some delicious tomatoes.

I buy one of these every year. I don't get the bumper crop of tomatoes that some people do, but there is nothing that beats waiting for a perfectly ripe tomato picked right off the deck. They have somewhat improved the design over the years. You definitely need to water every day as instructed. Our planter hangs off a hook outside of the deck so it is not in the way. I put egg shells in the soil when I do the initial planting and once or twice during the growing cycle. The added calcium helps to prevent blossom end rot. This item is kind of kitschy seen-on-tv thing, but it's fun and it delivers.

I planted a tomato plant in this the same day I planted two plants in separate traditional planters. I have watered them all on the same schedule with the same amount of water. The other two plants have both given me tomatoes and are doing fine. The one in the Topsy Turvy planter is dead.
Grew a huge awesome garden.

Grew a huge awesome garden.... or that was the plan. Woodchucks have ravaged every garden in town again despite capture efforts. Only survivors, my topsy turvy plants. To all my neighbors who laughed, how are your veggies? Lmao
Don't but it!

This new version is not "improved". Bring back the old one. It is impossible to get the root ball up through the
new "starburst" device on the bottom without causing significant disruption to the root ball and great loss of the
dirt surrounding it. After you do get the root ball through it the pressure of the dirt you initially add to the inside of the planter
puts pressure on the ball, making it bulge out from the bottom. The "old" version worked perfectly. You left the biodegradable
pot intact, slid the foam insert over the stem of the plant, and gently slid the plant down from the top of the planter. The opening
at the bottom of the planter was large enough to get any small plant through it and the foam insert closed the hole perfectly.
I have purchased these ever since they were introduced, I definitely will not but them again.
