I bought this trekking poles simply because my friend broke his knees when he was hiking in one of the State park. He always take the trekking poles with him when hiking, but last time he did not bring the poles with him when he was was hiking with his wife. He fell to the ground in a not very steep trail, since it had rain the day before. He told me he should have the trekking poles with him and he wouldn't hurt himself if he had the poles that day. He was rescued by a team of people with a helicopter since he hurt himself pretty bad and there was no easy way to get out.
This trekking poles is good since it is relatively light and can be folded. It is very short after you fold it and you can put it in your backpack when you think you don't need it for a gentle trail. I strongly recommend you use it all the time when you are hiking.
