Worked out of the box; appears to be well engineered; first two days we made 11 good prints with no significant print issues.
Kelle_JaneMarch 30, 2018
My early impressions (first two days of use) were very good; the printer worked out of the box without issue.
Printer arrived next day after we ordered it and the packaging was excellent (double boxed).
This is our first home 3D printer; we had no prior experience with a 3D printing and we were able to make 11 prints the first two days.

What I liked:
The touch display works as expected and contributes to the printer's ease of use.
We are transporting files to the printer with a USB stick which is simple and easy.
The bed leveling is assisted-manual not automatic but it seems quick and easy to use.
The build plate works fantastic: prints stick during printing and release without much effort when finished printing..
There are several magnets in the bed and the removable build surface is metal with a special coating.
I am an engineer and was impressed with what appears to be a high-quality well thought out design using rigid steel construction everywhere.
The printer is a bit heavy due to all the steel but not too heavy.
What I can see of the wiring looks really clean and well designed.
The manual I received is in English and it is easy to read and understand.
Appears to be an excellent design: hardware and software especially at this price point.
Nice tool kit was included with extra nozzels, screws, one extra build surface etc.

What I did not like (minor):
- Stepper motors are a bit noisy.
- Amazon was out of stock of the X-Smart build surfaces when I ordered and I wanted to order some spares.
- 3D printers are complex and they will eventually all need servicing.
Given this need to service the printers this printer should have a maintenance guide (either paper or on the USB stick).
I would appreciate mechanical and electrical wiring diagrams and directions for simple tune-up items like how to tighten the belts, tighten the pulley screws or change nozzles.

5 stars with minor reservations. My brother has one of these printers and has had zero problems. He said it was easy to use and the software was intuitive so I purchased one. First unit I ordered never showed up. Amazon was quick with a refund as I ordered the second unit. Second unit worked for three prints then the extruder fan stopped working. Amazon again was quick to the rescue and refunded me. I ordered a third unit and it has been amazing to use (so far). With about a dozen prints so far, it's performed very well. I am glad I stuck with it.
Best enclosed desktop 3D printer for $500
Kyle SamuelsonMarch 15, 2018
Qidi Tech X-Smart is the best affordable enclosed desktop 3D printer. Great quality, great price, and great customer service.

Very easy to maintenance.
Similar mehanics as makerbot, standard extruder arrangement. Easy to disassemble and reassemble extruder and hot end. Lots of YouTube video tutorials on how to maintenance and upgrade this assembly.
Thin ribbon cable connects all electronics on printer head, just disconnect one single electronic ribbon cable instead of disconnecting multiple thick cables on regular setups. Saves time, no wirring harness to take apart and put back together if you need to take the electronics out.
Under panel is where the power supply is located and most electronics, all conveniently placed together and organized.

Excellent Customer Serice
Qidi Tech is located in China, but they maintain excellent customer service thru apps like Skype, WhatsApp etc, or you can email them. In my experience I got a reply in just a couple minutes, they may even replace a part if you break it, and ship it out the same day.

Works out of the box
Just put on the roll of included filament, feed into extruder, level the bed, and that's it. You're ready to start printing immediently. Not a kit; no assembly required.

Enclosure
This has a very efficient enclosure, keeps the heat inside, prints ABS very well; no cracking, peeling, or delaminating. 3D Printers without an enclosure cannot print ABS and other plastics because heat escapes. This enclosure works very well with ABS.
You can easily remove the enclosure panels for better performance of fast cooling plastics like PLA.
The frame is steel and extremely sturdy, also heavy. The front has a stylish plastic facade.

Hotend
This printer does not come with an "all-metal" hotend, rather there is a ptfe(Teflon) tube from the extruder to the nozzle. The advantage of Teflon sleeve is reduced friction guiding the filament into the nozzle, less likely to cause a jam or clog. Keep temperature below 230c* and you shouldn't have any issues.

Compatible Filaments
This kind of hotend is perfect for PLA and ABS. Remove all panels when printing PLA, you want air ventilation. But for ABS, you want complete enclosure, no ventilation, make sure inside remains hot.
Carbon fiber, Glow-in-dark, or filaments with abrasive material will open up the stock brass nozzle hole, reducing print quality fast. You can upgrade nozzle with plated abrasive-resistance nozzle to alleviate this issue.
Metal filaments work amazing with this printer, and don't seem to be very abrasive to the included brass nozzle, however I still recommend upgrading to plated nozzle when working with infused filaments..
Wood infused PLA filament works well with included brass nozzle, tho not easy.
PETG (food grade) prints perfectly, easy to work with.
TPU (flexible filament) works but not easily.
TPE (elastic filament) works if you go very very slow. If you want to print TPE at normal speed, you must upgrade extruder.
This printer cannot print Polycarbonate, only very expensive printers can.

Packaging
This was a heavy box, most of the packaging fit inside the enclosure. Plenty of styrofoam, and easy to remove from packaging. Includes user manual and instructions written in proper English.
Also includes a tool box, with spatula, Allen wrenches, hex wrench, spare screws and tools you may need. They even included spare nozzle, fuse, extra bed tray, flash drive, even spare plugs on the board just in case.

Included software
Qidi tech has its own slicing engine, meaning you upload your 3D model into the program, and it creates instructions for the 3D printer, called gcode. Because Qidi Tech makes both hardware and software, settings are automatically adjusted in program. Wireless printing via WiFi is available if you set it up, so you don't have to walk back and fourth from your computer to your printer with and SD card of USB drive each print. You can still use Cura or Simplify if you want expert settings.

User interface.
HD touchscreen gives the user all the standard controls most FDM printers have, including bed leveling.

So many magnets!
Front door uses magnet to secure close, feels nice to open and close the door.
The clear panels on the sides have embedded magnets, very easy to pop on and off panels.
Top hood also has embedded magnets, just pop on or pop off when needed.
Printing bedalso has embedded magnets, that secures the removable tray, very easy and fun to take the tray off, remove printed part, and put tray back on. Magnet snaps feel so rewarding, popping pannels and tray on and off, this printer has so many easily removable magnetic connections. No need to worry about screws with this printer.

CONS:
Spool holder does not fit 2kilogram+ spools. Cannot print Polycarbonate. No proper adjustable belt tensioner, uses non-adjustable springs. Included software does not support different nozzle size, only .4mm, You can use different nozzle size is you use Cura or other slicing software. You cannot print via WIFI without included slicing software.

BOTTOM LINE:

This printer is perfect for beginners, it's a low investment to get a high quality 3D printer. Works right out of the box, very little issues. Also good for expert that plans to upgrade.

The biggest fear consumers have with 3D printers, is not having help if you're stuck with a broken printer. That should not happen if you buy this printer because Qidi Tech always helps if you ask, also Amazon does not abandon its customers.

Overall best bang for your buck. If you can't buy a 3D printer from a local manufacturer, you might as well buy international.
The touch screen is responsive and easy to use
LincolnMarch 5, 2018
Coming from someone who previously purchased a Monoprice printer with awful luck and many problems, this printer works spectacularly out of the box. The removable printer bed is a godsend, and works well. The touch screen is responsive and easy to use, there's built in functions for leveling and preheating, etc. Partially disassembling the hot end shows this printer to be easy to work on and well designed.

A few small problems, like missing a screw on the bottom cover over the electronics, and having to trim the tinest little piece of plastic off the hot end cover were improvements but not necessary. The tool kit the printer came with had spare parts and tools necessary to replace the missing screw. Awesome!

One piece of advice with this printer: For PLA plastic, be sure to use lower bed temps than other printers might use. The print surface has a light texture to it, and if you use too high of a bed temp, the print will strongly bond to your print surface making it a huge pain to remove.
