I think that the nut could be tapered a little to allow the bit to be higher from the table for certain cuts, and still have a good hold on the bit shank.

This is amazingly beautiful machining. Both 1/2" and 1/4" router bits fit perfectly and snugly. At first, I thought that it wouldn't fit my Rockwell shaper cartridge, but I kept tightening the bolt at the bottom and it pulled down into the cartridge nice and tight. The instructions say not to "climb cut," which means pushing work the "wrong" direction. I was getting tearout from the router bit I was using and switched to climb cutting. After a few minutes, I checked and the chuck was loosening. So I won't do that again.
