Very good smart lock
Rohit Sharma✓ Verified PurchaseAugust 13, 2023
This smart lock is easy to install and looks classy in the satin metal finish. I did have a problem closing the black side strip that tightens the lock on deadbolt. That's the only reason I would take off a star. Otherwise it's a good product. The app is well thought out and has required functionality. So far I haven't been able to figure out any usage of connecting it to Alexa. But overall am very pleased with the purchase.
Fairly easy to install with great instructions. Works well

I purchased the Smart Lock with the WiFi Bridge. I liked this one because I can leave the keyed side as it is and just add smart locking/unlocking to my front door.

I was able to physically install it in a literally a couple of minutes. The app gives you step-by-step animated instructions that were very well done. Once it was physically installed, I had to set up the lock in the August app and connect the WiFi bridge, which wasn't quite as easy, but still not too bad.

August app found the lock quickly. One of the first things it wants to do is calibrate the lock, but the lock started making noises and the app kept popping up "checksum error" messages. I killed the app, moved the lock from locked to unlocked, and then restarted the app. It's been working fine since then, so hopefully that's not a problem. I didn't even have to recalibrate it.

In order to use Alexa, I had to connect the WiFi bridge. You do that in the August app as well. Make sure you're on your home's 2.4ghz network and not 5ghz. If you're on the 5ghz it'll go through all the motions but fail without a good explanation.

After setting it up, the app tests the signal from the bridge to the lock. You plug the bridge directly into an outlet, and they recommend that you use one as close to the door as possible. Yeah, they're not kidding. It's ridiculous that my first outlet, maybe 4 feet way was "unreliable" and I couldn't finish the install. Fortunately, I have another outlet behind a hutch that's a little closer, and that one worked.

Alexa found the lock immediately. I added locking the door to my "Goodnight" routine and created one called "lock door" that waits 10 seconds and then locks the door (so I can give the command and get the door shut before it starts to lock.

One odd thing: Almost immediately the Alexa commands stopped working. I looked at the routines and the lock was missing from all three I'd set up. This happened after I unplugged the WiFi bridge for a moment. Annoying, but the lock still auto-unlocks and works with the August app, so at least that shouldn't cause me to get locked out if it happens again.

The door reliably auto-unlocks when I get home, and you can get alert that tell you whenever it's locked or unlocked either manually or through auto-activity.

If you want to keep your key and and have a smart lock, this seems like a great way to go.
Had for three years now with extreme weather and heavy use

We have a large family and none of us work from home, so this lock has been used multiple times a day and night every single day for three years now. We live with very humid summers and below zero temps during long winters. We do not have a storm door on the door we use this lock, so it's had wind gusts, snow, rain, and ice and still going strong. The batteries have been replaced once a year. I didn't expect that, I thought they'd need to be replaced much more frequently. We have not had any issues with it.

What I've loved about this lock is the app that is used with it. It is so easy, a bright red dot on the screen means it is locked, tap the dot and it unlocks. My mom with limited dexterity can easily use it and doesn't need to fumble with a key or through the app. I can check the app from work to make sure the door is locked after I know everyone has left for the day. If it isn't, I can lock it from anywhere remotely. If there is a day I know I'm running behind before younger kids are coming home I can unlock the door when I know they're arriving and know they can go inside and I'm on the way and will be there soon. We can also provide access permanently or temporarily to other people, like our adult children that have moved away, or company we have in town for a few days.

Another benefit is that we still have the exterior deadbolt piece fully functional with this smart lock deadbolt. So our regular house key works still, too. The smart lock just is a mechanism that turns the deadbolt open or closed from the inside. We kept our doorknob lock, so we can lock that one as well if desired.

You do need to have an outlet nearby the door you install this lock, for the wi-fi bridge to plug into.
Great butt...

I like the lock but there are a few flaws. I got this one because it had a traditional thumb turn as opposed to the other August locks.
1st issue I had was with my front door: When I went to mount the plate, no matter what I did, the turning bar for the deadbolt sat too far right. That caused me to have to place the adapter with the backplate unscrewed then screw it down. The left side tightened all the way. The left is loose (screw might not have grabbed at all). Now, I experienced where the lock will vibrate ever so slightly and fail to lock or unlock completely (causing a calibration to be necessary). Minor inconvenience as it happened only once so far. Time will tell if I need to try and work on remounting the lock or not.
2nd issue I have is with the one on my back door: The hole where the deadbolt goes into the door frame is ever so slightly farther forward compared to where the deadbolt/door wants to naturally go when locking so I sometimes have to push on the door when locking it to get it to align properly (manually) or slam the door to get the deadbolt to align with the August attached (never had the problem with the manual thumb turn only).
3 stars for Alexa integration. It does what you'd expect and nothing more. Lock, unlock, tell you if the door is locked/unlocked. Or if you have the sensor installed, tell you if the door is open or not. It does nothing more.
Despite my 2 issues, is this easy to install? It took me about 20 minutes each for 2 doors. The instructions state to have the deadbolt in the unlocked position and the lock unlocked when mounting the lock. However, you can turn past unlocked to reverse the lock rather easily (I had to reverse my back door because it swings left instead of right). What I did instead for the front door was lock the door with the key with it open, then leave the August lock in the locked position as you can't turn the thumb turn any farther forward than what it is set at when you get it. Then I mounted it and calibrated it from locked (meaning just skip the turning the lock to locked part and move on to the step to turning the lock to unlocked... The instructions would tell you to turn the lock (from unlocked) to locked then back to unlocked).

Only time will tell if I am happy with my August lock. Why I got this over the other round August locks + connect support was mainly because this design had a traditional thumb turn as opposed to the round ones where you turn the bezel. Why did I get this instead of a full smart deadbolt kit? Because I didn't want new keys. Why did I get this? Mainly because I forget to lock the door when I enter the house due to fighting away my dog and cat from leaving the house. It will help with groceries etc but I got good carrying multiple bags in both hands and unlocking/opening the door without putting the bags down. Also, when I walk the dog, I don't need to carry anything except my phone (I still have a hide-a-key outside well hidden if needed).
Mostly exactly what I'm looking for

I really like the lock for relative ease of installation and keeping the standard lock appearance on the outside. Most, if not all, other lock systems require you to replace the outside portion of the dead bolt as well. This can involve rekeying or complete loss of a key slot at all.

I say relative ease, because I did not see the part waaaay at the bottom of their product info page that this is made for single cylinder deadbolts only. This is important, because double cylinder dead bolts have shorter tailpieces and do not engage the back of the August. I had to get a different tailpiece for it to work. 2nd problem was the door. It is a 9 light window door that is very wide. This put the frame of the window very close to the lock location making it impossible to engage the latches to attach the lock to the plate. I had to loosen the frame and pull it away from the door to get the unit seated and locked in. Fortunately this was in a garage, and they never installed the screw finish plugs so I could access them.(you can see what I mean in the picture).

As far as the lock itself, so far it does everything I expect. I love the auto relock feature. I'm often in and out of the garage with my arms full. Previously I had a key lock on the inside for extra security, but because of it being a key lock, never used it. With this, I can shut the door behind me, knowing I won't have to go out into the cold garage later to check if it's locked.
I haven't had an opportunity to test the geofencing unlock feature.

Operation is reasonably quiet. Not silent, but quieter than I thought it would be.

On to the remote features. For being a relatively expensive stand alone item, this is not a very good unit. I would expect it to be a much stronger signal, both from the lock, and to the wifi. As per the instructions, you have to have the unit plugged in within 10 feet of the lock. This doesn't offer much flexibility. Surprisingly, I have a very close outlet in the garage, and it still reads only "good" for the bluetooth connection. Admittedly, we are at the edge of our wifi range in the garage, but a wireless security camera mounted outside has no problem getting a signal. The August remote doesn't always connect.

I like that you can have different accounts for different users, but still have them as an "owner". Another device I have we just log into the same account, as the secondary account is limited in access. Not a huge deal, but knowing who utilized the lock is nice info.
