Image Quality old films are new again!

In past years, I have had my black and white film work done by a professional developer and professionally scanned. I recently decided to go back to developing my own negatives (something I haven't done since the 1970's) in order to have control over the developer being used. All happy with my first role, I brought it to be scanned and found out that the price was now double the cost of same lab doing the developing and scanned to removable media. No explanation given take it or leave, so I decided to buy a scanner, and do it myself. Regardless of price, this scanner is far better image quality than the local professional lab. I now am rescanning all my negatives that they did in the past five years. I consider them to be new photos. They are that good in tonal range, and the image quality is out of the box at 7200dpi. If your on the fence thinking about buying this scanner my advice just buy it. Or as an old friend has told me when you get in my age category "just look at your drivers license and see if you should deny yourself."
Worth it to save old slides.

I used this to scan slides I took over 45 years ago, all Kodachrome. Some had turned an ugly red (all too common) and the Silverscan software did an amazing job of 'restoring' the color while scanning. I found the batch command a little unwieldy, but the Autopilot helped my workflow. Silverscan software documentation is somewhat helpful, but not nearly as detailed as it should be. The scanner itself is a breeze to use, however, its dedicated purpose means it will be a pointless piece of equipment when I'm done digitizing my slides. My initial project was "down and dirty" scans for a class reunion. I now plan to rescan everything for archival purposes using CR2 formats with infrared layers, so I can do more in-depth retouching. PS. get the extra slide mounts, if you're doing a lot of scans it helps to get them loaded ahead of time.
Does entail a Learning Curve

Well, I had a rough start with (not Plustek) with Silverfast. But Plustek helped me with technical support anyway. Silverfast was more difficult to get ahold of--but through email contact option got a very helpful support person.
So all is good. With about 500 family slides sent to me from a family estate going through the 50's thru these slides is fun. Worth the cost, yes!

I was very apprehensive about purchasing this scanner after reading the many one and two star reviews, but I was in need of a good quality, high resolution scanner to digitize the hundreds, if not thousands, of 35mm slides and negatives I've shot and what has been handed down from relatives. I'm glad I took a chance on the 8300i AI. I did encounter an issue with the supplied Quickscan Plus software not scanning the entire image area of certain 35mm color slides. I submitted a support request to Plustek and received a reply within hours. After some basic troubleshooting, they provided a workaround that solved the issue. The quality of the scans has been excellent. I scan at the highest resolution, 7200 dpi / 48 bit, and find the scan times acceptable - ~2 minutes per scan afterwhich I do the post=processing in GIMP. The dust and scratch tool has also worked wonderfully. There are instances of scans where I have found it best to turn off the tool - i.e. when there small signs with words. The Silverfast 9 software appears to be a great addition for doing the initial scan and post process, but I continue to use GIMP.
Excellent slide/negative scanner

Much better than the cheaper $120 - $150 models with the built in viewers. Capable of very sophisticated corrections and tweaking, however, I used it with just the default settings and the results were quite good.
