Trading waterproof performance for a good fit
first time✓ Verified Purchase•August 25, 2017
I ordered 1/2 size up as is listed in most reviews. The length is good. The volume is good. The width is not what I would like. The specialist who make inserts measure my foot as 4E. I have stepped in puddles and the shoes remained dry. However, I did an early morning hike through brush wet with dew and found my feet swimming in water. I had on gators. So it appears the leak is at the base of the tung and the leak is slow. It took about two hours to get swimming feeling. The traction or grip is good not great. While the waterproof performance was not as good as boots twice as expensive, the fit is better. I rather have good fit. So I will stick with these boots until something better comes along.

Was not as described. To narrow to be 4E
Great fit, but runs large.

I just got these, so the five stars is based on my initial reaction, not from extended wear of the boots.
First things first, these boots run large. I normally wear a men's 9.5 EE/EEE. I ordered a 9.5 4E and the length was too long by *at least a half-size.* I exchanged for a size 9.0 4E and the fit is good, with room in the toe box and not too much room around the foot that it would cause blisters.
I went with a 4E, because 2E shoes are often snug on my right foot. (My right foot is a 3E and many shoes are not available in 3E.) This shoe's foot bed cradles your foot almost to the point that it feels like arch support on the outside edge of your foot. For that reason, be certain you get a good width. Anything too narrow will make you feel like you are wearing orthotics.
All in all, I am very happy with the purchase and am looking forward to putting them to some serious trail hiking this year.

I have a narrow foot and it's difficult to find shoes in my width. These shoes are really nice, well made, lite weight...a perfect fit for me!
follow up 5/2/2017 - the more i wear these shoes, the more i like them. they are strong, durable and very comfortable. after wearing all day, they feel as comfortable as they did when i put them on in the morning and they are even more comfortable after wearing almost a year than when i first bought them.
would i purchase again = Oh yeah, for sure
do i recommend = everyone's feet are slightly different so i doubt everyone will get the results that i have but i would definitely recommend...at least give them a try.

I order up one-half size and they fit fine. Also in many shoes I wear wider than 4E, last pair of New Balance hiking boots were a 6E, but these Dunhams fit fine with 4E width and ordering up one-half size from a 9 to a 9.5, leaving enough room for medium socks and a thin silk liner sock. I can't give them more than 4 stars at this point, simply haven't used them enough. They do have a pretty stiff shank in the boot, which I prefer to cut down on foot bruises in rough, rocky, rooty terrain. You may not like that if your not ordering these to do some back country hiking. It takes a little while in these to work a little flexibility in the shank, to my previous experiences. As far as light use so far, the boots have been fine.
