Pet Gear Ramp aids arthritic, partially blind dog, get into back of SUV.
F. Robert Wilson✓ Verified PurchaseNovember 4, 2017
The Pet Gear Tri-fold Ramp shipped when promised. It is sturdy and both unfolds and folds easily. It comes with a strap to clip with carabiner clip to the tailgate securing bracket in my SUV. The ramp has a rugged abrasive surface to prevent the dog losing traction. We have a deck with four steps from ground to deck. Dog, who is arthritic and partially blind, can no longer make the jump into my SUV. She is 55 lbs and I, like her, am an arthritic geriatric guy. I can't lift her into the SUV. First, Dog walked the ramp while it lay on the ground, with biscuit rewards for success. Then we began stair trials. Dog walked the ramp with it raised to the first step, then, increasing the difficulty, the second, third, and fourth, all with biscuit rewards. Finally she practiced walking the ramp raised to the height of the SUV. In all, she took three hours of distributed learning trials to master walking the ramp into the SUV. I am very pleased.
About that Sandpaper

I could see after one trip up and down the ramp that the sandpaper "nonslip" surface just would not do. We've all seen the carpeted version here on Amazon but paying another ~ $70 for a few patches of rug ...hmmm. I fixed mine by using a kitchen-style rug, cut to fit each section, because the rubber backing is more suitable for gluing that bare threads. I used gorilla glue and that works fine. My dog is 65 lbs, and with a little guidance on the ramp negotiates it fine. I like the tri-fold feature, it would be way too big to carry and store otherwise. I'll give it 3.5 stars - it does the job, could be easily improved with a rubber surface instead of sandpaper, and better latches to keep the folded product folded.
2 thumbs up from me 4 paws from the Daisy the dog.

Got this for my 11 year old rescued pitbull. I already had another brand an extra long bi-fold model made of aluminum. I used to use the aluminum one for my old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. It worked well for the dogs and fit into the back of my 4X4 Chevy truck. It was sturdy but heavy and getting it folded and stowed in the truck became more and more of a chore. Fortunately my old dog passed away, before I did, from wrestling that heavy ramp. I stopped using the ramp since my pitbull could get into the trucks front cab with me. When I sold the truck and got a jeep wrangler, it became a challenge for my dog to get into the Jeep. My old ramp would not fit into the new car so I started looking for something easier to manage that took up less space and was usable for my critter. I narrowed down the choices to the tri-fold one with carpet and the other without. The one with the sandy surface was similar to the older ramp. None of my dogs had a problem with the sandy traction surface so I got it. I really like how small the tri-fold packed up and how easy it was to fold/unfold. It fits well in the Jeep and although it has a steeper slope when set up than my old extra long one, it works great. Although my dog had never used a ramp, a string cheese stick and the desire to "go for ride" got her up and down the ramp in two tries. She could jump into the Jeep but jumping out was getting to be a challenge and like my dog (getting old), I was also finding it a challenge to lift her down out of the Jeep. She seems to really enjoy the ramp and I know the stress of in and out of the Jeep is greatly reduced for both of us. The surface of the ramp is getting scratched by her toenails from her first tries using the ramp but now she knows the routine there has been no further significant wear. It is a lightweight ramp but seems to be very sturdy in use. I still am working on the most efficient way to fold/unfold it while hanging on to the dogs leash.
DO NOT BUY!!!!

This piece of garbage is covered in 60 or 80 grit sandpaper as a nonslip surface. It injured my dog the first time he tried to use it. I am returning it for a refund

I just opened this as I had set up an appointment for ramp training for my dog with our trainer. We had to stop using this ramp after two tries because the sandpaper cut up ALL FOUR of my dogs feet to the point where he's bleeding profusely. Do not buy this ramp. It shouldn't even be available for sale because it's so dangerous and unsuitable. Also, it is not for big dogs. My 75-lb dog was also able to very easily shift it out of place (even when secured with the provided clamp).
