I'm very disappointed with this product and believe this is a poorly designed for several reasons:
- the metal posts have a raw metal bottom; they should have rubber surface underneath so they don't scratch the crossbars
- the post doesn't tighten effectively and.. the entire rig wobbles a bit
- the top 'M' shape on the post is a really poor design; makes it very difficult to affix the straps; it would be better to use an 'O' shape.
- the quick release nuts are fine they are prone to loosening during a lengthy drive which can cause a big problem; recommend a lock nut design.
- the recommended knot to utilize the J hooks is bewildering; I'm ex-Navy and an avid sailor and the knot they recommend makes no sense
- 60mm bolts are provided but have no explanation; I reckon those are for taller crossbars but it would be useful for those to be labeled

I'm trying to install this on a 2016 Outback wagon. I recommend instead to consider a Yakima product; I've had 2 of their racks during the past 15yrs and like them a lot.
2 kayaks on factory crossbars of a 2011 Subaru Outback
Keith EdgemonMay 16, 2017
These worked great. I wasn't sure what to expect because it's hard to get straight answers about weight ratings for factory crossbars.
I have a 2011 Subaru Outback with factory roof rack and crossbars. I used this product to haul a Wilderness Systems Pamlico 135T (~75 lbs) and an Emotion Tide (10' 3", ~50 lbs) while going on vacation. INSIDE the kayaks I carried 4 fishing rods, 4 paddles, 4 PFDs, and my fishing tackle box. When I put the kayaks on the car I simply rolled them so the cockpits faced each other and wasn't worried about the things inside falling out.
The kayaks were well secured while traveling at interstate speeds to our vacation spot over 250 miles away.

I did need two people to get the kayaks set onto the racks and held there while securing them if following directions. This was less necessary when loading up for the return trip, but holding the 13.5' tandem vertical while also strapping it to the sticks is a little tough.

The kit comes with two sets of bolts of different lengths for use with crossbars of different widths. Even the short bolt ends were pretty close to the paint for the front crossbar. I plan to buy a slightly shorter set of bolts for future use, but the ones supplied with the kit worked out fine.

The Malone Stax Pro2 kayak carrier is nothing short of amazing! They fit my Rhino Rack Stealth Cross Bars, which measure 3 1/8 in thick, perfectly with room for slightly larger bars. They are quick and easy to install. The pads look as though they will soon rip where they bend to put over the bars, but with the kayaks on them and tightened down they wont go anywhere even if they do rip. The straps are great! The metal buckles have a leather strip behind them that protects your kayak from the metal rubbing on it. This set includes 4 red tie down straps meant to hook around the stax, your kayaks, and the cross bars, one blue tie down strap to hold both kayaks together, and bow/stern ropes. Be kind to yourself and follow the directions about how to secure the kayaks to the Stax. If you follow the directions it is quick and easy. All in all, this was a great purchase and we are extremely pleased with them.
Very easy to set up and install

Very easy to set up and install. Came with all the necessary pieces and straps. The only ding is that it says the pads fit aero style cross bars - and they do - but not perfectly well. I have Thule Aeroblades, which are not symmetric in their shape. The front is thicker than the back, like an airplane wing. The pads are cut symmetrically though, and not to fit the wider side. But we made it work. It would be nice if they added something to secure the position of the pads on the crossbar. I just bound bungee cords on the outer side of each pad so they wouldn't slip away from the center post under weight. Not sure if that would even happen but I felt it necessary so added my own.

As mentioned in other comments, the pads don't really work well and they aren't durable. But we're using it transport 4 kayaks on top of a Honda Odyssey so we can't use the pads anyway.
