Works good but is a handful

Just finished digging holes for footings for a deck. The auger did a good job. I can report a few issues and the ways to fix them. First, following the manufacturer's instructions, I had a difficult time starting it. I took it by a local lawnmower repair place and they showed me how to start it. They said it tends to flood easily. So, if you follow the manufacturer's instructions and it doesn't want to start after pulling the starting cord several times, it's probably flooded. Simply move the choke lever from "start" to "run" and give it a couple of good pulls-- it should start. Second, when you're drilling and the auger gets deeper in the soil, it has a tendency to get stuck. When it does this, the auger stops and the top of the device spins around. I got a good bruise on my left hand from this happening. After a while, I realized a way to stop this. While the manufacturer says you should hold the device directly in front of you, I found that if I turned by body a bit to the right and put my left hip up against the left handle (while holding it), then auger would keep digging and the top wouldn't spin, since it was pushing against my body weight. This worked well.
NOT worth the money.

The powerhead is way underpowered for the 12" auger bit. After digging only 12 holes the choke handle literally fell off, snapped off at the base and the powerhead is really hard to start. Also the throttle trigger is messing up, I can barely touch it before it is running at full speed and pressing it to hard causes the engine to die. It won't even turn the 12" bit now. When the instructions say warm up the engine for 3 to 5 minutes they were serious because it will keep dying if you don't wait. I have to keep putting the screw back in the heat shield as it keeps falling out. Altogether I would NOT recommend anyone buying this Auger if they are going to use it for any real work. It just won't stand up to the work. All I had to dig was 34 holes and I had to use the 8" auger to start them then use shovels and hand held post hole diggers to finish the holes. Barely pushes the 8" auger now.
AWESOME PURCHASE!!

Got to admit I was just a tad worried that this reasonably priced tool would disappoint....I was wrong!! Firstly, the company was SOOOOO fast to deliver and there were NO problems out of the box!! We were a little taken back by the 30-to-1 gas mix but there was an included container to assist. And hey- it looks like a very small amount of gas but we used hardly any. We had a project that required12 - 4x4" 8'tall posts to be set 2' deep for a grapevine arbor. The price for hiring another project was a MINIMUM of $450 just for them to bring their equipment and it was a larger project so I went with that....but for this one, I decided to try this. WOW!!! Our ground is Virginia red clay and is difficult to dig even a few inches...but this post hole digger was the BEAST!!! OMG....my husband was amazed....it took us longer to mark the proper location than it did to dig the holes!! We are older and I was concerned it would not do the job. I don't think it took us half an hour to do them all and used hardly any gas. WE SAVED SO MUCH MONEY and now are not intimidated to work a few more projects.
In good soil it did its job just fine

My husband ended up replacing the fence around our yard and used this to dig most of the holes for the new posts.
This is his review: I dug about 36 holes with this auger for a new fence. I will say that it got hot after a couple holes and I had to turn it off and put it in the shade a lot. Then I could pick it back up after about an hour and dig some more holes. It had a tough time in the hard clay around my house, and could not get past roots. In good soil it did its job just fine. I had trouble getting it started the first time and I almost sent it back. I had put in some stihl two stroke oil and some gas mixed as it said but it just wouldn't run, finally before sending it back I thought I would try a different oil. I went and got some more gas and a different oil and mixed it again and refilled the tank and it finally started with the new oil. Make sure you have the right mix exactly for this. Also the handle for the pull rope is like a cruel joke. I don't know how but that thing is designed to hurt. I've used a lot of pull ropes in my day but this one is oddly torturous. I used the 10 inch bit and could hold on ok by myself, definitely a one man auger in case you're worried about that. Couple times when it hit a root it would jog you a bit though.

As others have said, this machine has great power. Read your instructions and never let your guard down. Hang on to it and if at all possible, have a second person help you. Don't go full throttle. It's not necessary. Lift and clear your auger often. If you hit a rock about the size of a large potato, it will stop and twist your wrists. Another thing a person may consider is purchasing a smaller auger. I purchased an 8 inch auger and by the time it wobbled around through the hard clay and rocks, my hole was larger than 8 inches. I really have no complaints so far. Just to be clear, my first practice hole was known to be nothing but dirt and clay. It did great. Just hang on and let it do it's job. Just like any tool, you buy it to do a job. This tool will do what you want it to.
