Really heavy construction. It works
A_Reader✓ Verified Purchase•October 2, 2023
First impression. I was surprised on the size and weight of this tool. It is really solid.
I am not sure if there is a quality issue with the hardware provided to assemble the tool or if that is the design to prevent damage.
The screws provided have a square "neck" which match the hole from the outer tube, however the inner tube has a circular hole which does not allow the screw to get inside it. The square portion of the screw fastens only the outer tube. I was expecting to have matching square holes in both (inner and outer) tubes to allow the square section to secure both in place and have the screw head flushed against the outer tube. Maybe this was intentional, any heavy resistance when turning the digger will break the screw rather than bending the tool (just a guess).
It works and time will tell how durable the tool is, I am happy for now.

Well Made

Upon examining this auger out of the box, it quickly became apparent it was well constructed with fairly thick gauge steel and solid welding. Although there were no written instructions, the assembly was obvious and quick. It came with an adapter that I could not figure out until I re-checked the item listing on Amazon and discovered it's an option for using the auger with a large drill or possibly another type of heavy duty rotating connection such as a tractor take-off. I am not sure this auger is large and substantial enough to withstand that type of heavy duty use. I don't own anything that would power an auger this size so I cannot report on how well this option works.
So far I have used the auger to make several shallow holes for planting 2 gallon mums. A single hole was not wide enough for each plant, so 2-3 holes adjacent to each other were required to get an adequate diameter to accept the plants. However, the process went pretty quickly and was somewhat easier than my usual method of using spades/shovels. I foresee landscaping and gardening activities as my primary use for this auger, but it will be a nice addition to my tool collection for any future light-to-medium projects in which I need to make smaller holes in the ground.

Good hand auger for already worked earth, not great for rocky soils

I give this auger pretty high marks for quality, construction, and sturdiness. It went together fairly quickly and easily, and for soft soils that have been tilled recently, this tool is absolutely the bomb! Made placing a dozen new T-posts sooooo much easier than the usual 'pound them in until my shoulders want to die' and much faster, too.
Out of curiosity, I also tried it on unplowed earth that's fairly soft and not compacted, but with a healthy vegetation load. It was a little less successful there, but still easier than pounding posts in by hand.
Unfortunately, I got to the compacted, rocky soil (a lot of old, unworked glacial till with layers of 'moon dust' and crusty sand and LOTS of rocks from pebbles up to fist sized) and unfortunately, it was a total bust there. Not going to say I was surprised, because physics were against me, but it was worth a mention.
I mentioned this to a friend of mine who is a big ice fishing aficionado and he wants to borrow it when the lakes up here freeze over, to see if it would be worth his time and effort vs hauling the big heavy gas powered auger he uses!

It does make a hole, rather slowly

I tried it in a few soil types. In my raised bed with garden soil it did great at pulling dirt up. In my sandy topsoil it cut a hole but all the sand had to be removed by hand, it did leave a round hole afterwards. When I tried it in clay I had to put too much pressure on the handle to even try and get it to cut. The sellers description is right, this is meant for already worked ground, not for digging fence post holes. I would like to try it on a frozen lake, if I get a chance to ill update the review.
Great tool
