Death Trap

Was given this cage when we adopted a Syrian hamster. She was far too big for it so we put her in a larger cage. Our dwarf hamster had had babies about two or threes weeks previously, and the new owners of the female babies were a few days later picking them up. We placed the mother dwarf and the two female dwarf babies in this cage. They were in it for about two days when we came home and found the mother had gotten her head stuck between the bar and had died. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DWARF HAMSTERS. Very dangerous. The spacing between the bar is just wide enough to where they can put their heads through, but can't get them out.
Hamsters Escape, Worthless for Dwarfs

I bought this cage because it was recommended on a small animals website. Cleaning is no easy chore with this cage. The second story is awkward to remove, clean and replace. The little house is also difficult to remove and replace after cleaning. Worst of all, after about two months, the dwarf hamsters figured out a way to squeeze themselves between the horizontal bars and escape. If you do a web search for "hamsters escape cage", you will come across several videos exhibiting this. I had to go to a local pet store and purchase an aquarium to keep the hamsters contained and safe. This meant I also had to start over with a new wheel and water dispenser. This purchase was a complete waste of money.
Easy to clean, but...

I already had the single level version of this cage and it is very, very easy to clean, which I love and is the reason I purchased this one. I am a bit disappointed in this two-level model as the base of the second level is very flimsy and does not lock down securely until you clip on the food dishes. The configuration of the second level requires the ladder (which is a solid piece of plastic with ridges spaced too far apart) to be at a very steep angle which my dwarf hamster could not climb. I swapped out the ladder for a plastic tube which did the trick. The wheel is soft plastic which sags a little when she hops in, which is not good considering hamsters weigh next to nothing. Overall, the cage itself is fine and is easy to clean, but considering the price, the quality of the accessories need to be improved.
