CROCODILE CLIPS COMPLETELY ARE NOT USABLE - JUST COUNT THAT THEY DON'T EXIST AND YOU WILL NEED TO BUY THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE
Al FirmanMay 18, 2018
- Multimeter Thsinde 18B
It generally looks/works good, but I bought it ONLY because I need new test leads and crocodile clips for my two old multimeters, and new set of them are almost the same price as this multimeter with probes and clips.
But these crocodile clips do not work "“ it looks like they are for regular 4mm bananas but their ends for 4mm banana were smashed/formed to flat so that 2mm banana can be inserted into clip with some efforts and be hold there. Yes, they enter with little efforts, but problem is that smashed part "“ end of clip - is not "springy enough" to hold 2mm banana after two or more insertions into it and compressing it again does not help. They become loosen and can not hold banana probes at all, clips are slipping out off bananas almost themselves "“ there is no springable tension. So, THESE CROCODILE CLIPS COMPLETELY ARE NOT USABLE - JUST COUNT THAT THEY DON'T EXIST AND YOU WILL NEED TO BUY THEM SOMEWHERE ELSE. How they can put not working parts in the kit?
So, I returned it. Wasted time, efforts, hopes.

P.S. I tested it with a couple of each value resistors: with shorted leads it's shown 0.1 Ohm; with 0.1% resistors 10 Ohms...1MOhm accuracy is good, less than 1%, sometimes 0.1%, but for resistor 0.1 Ohm 1% it's shown same 0.1 Ohm as with short leads, so it does not see this resistor at all. I did not tested it with resistors in range above 0.1 Ohm ...and below 10 Ohms, so i can't say anything, but probably below 1 Ohm it does not work.
With a couple of each value capacitors:
5% 100 pf = 0.037nF and 0.037nF i.e. 37pf and 37pf - NOT Good -67%
5% 220 = 0.166 and 0.165nF - NOT Good -25%

Frequency - i applied frequency from 10 Hz up to 10.8MHz (i don't have more) and it measured fine (?1% i update if I find records) with one note that voltage should be from 1volt (1volt if i am correct, i can't find my records, i update if I find records) RMS and up.
Good product at a good price

Received the multimeter a couple days ago and have only done preliminary accuracy testing with it. So far it seems to be working just fine.

This is my first Auto-Ranging multimeter so it takes a small amount of getting used to how it behaves and I need to figure out how the diode test feature works but for AC voltage, DC voltage, resistance and continuity testing it seems to be working just fine.

For accuracy, when I tested a wall outlet on the AC voltage setting, it went right to 120 VAC and held solid, so that's spot on.

For DC voltage, it's within 0.05V of my old Fluke 8024B meter, well within acceptable variance.

Resistance and continuity measurement also seems to be accurate. So far no issues with the unit.

I do like that the thick orange rubber surround molding has retaining clips for the test leads. However, you cannot have the aligator clips attached to the test leads and still have the clip into the molding. Annoying but by no means a deal breaker.
This is a preliminary judgement, after just opening the box it came in, will update after more use.

Ok so, keep in my how low the price is. There are some oddities about it.
First off the Non-contact voltage testing is hilariously inconsistent. It uses a series of dashes and beeps to indicate levels of voltage. Using the probes I measured 117 VAC at an extension cord coming off one of my wall sockets, and a similar 116 VAC at a socket in my kitchen. No problem there, yet somehow it does 2 dashes and medium frequency beeping at the kitchen socket, and maxes out both for the bedroom socket....What? By the way, I find the beeping entirely too loud, but that's just me.
EDIT: Realized that the NCV indications being so inconsistent had to do in part with the way I was holding the meter. See the way the meter is held to the power strip in the pictures? Yeah, you gotta position it to whatever you're checking for live voltage like that. Same goes for chords, you basically have to place them all the way across the top the same way.

2nd thing, thing is the battery doesn't seem to sit flush in the battery compartment. It makes contact and powers up the unit fine, but it doesn't sit flat in the compartment and keeps the battery door pushed out until you screw it back in.

Also the orange rubber overmold is damn near AS STIFF as the grey plastic underneath it! I'm not even convinced you could take it off without breaking it. And it can't possibly afford much in the way of fall protection. So, don't even think about dropping this thing from more than waist height if you care about longevity. For the $16 I spent on it, I could buy 3 and just be slightly over what it cost for the meter I use at work so I'm not too worried about it. I'm just saying that if you're a clumsy oaf like me, and you thought you were gonna be able to get away with being clumsy with this thing...I would reconsider based off first impressions.

And last the backlight seems to be on a 15ish second timer, whether the unit is idle or not. And there doesn't seem to be any way to make it permanent or longer. Not the worst thing in the world but it is still entirely too short.

As for the pros,
It seems to take good voltage measurements. It doesn't feel like it's built too cheaply. The backlight is bright even if the timer is too short. And the screen is nice and clear. The included probes come with friction fit alligator clips...and they're pretty secure unlike an identical looking set I bought off Amazon some time ago, although we'll see how long that lasts.

All in all, so far and for the price of the thing, I'm happy with it. I will update and compare to my old craftsman after I get some decent time in with it.
Excellent DVM, EXECLLENT PRICE
raphael bloomApril 3, 2018
I've worked as a biomedical engineer since 1972 and have gone through decades of the DVM evolution and I have to say this is one of the best DVMs I've ever owned. Mind you the Fluke DVMs similar to this one cost $300 dollars in the 70s and 80s. But a lot of things use to be :)
With that said, this DVM is easy to use once you figure out which of the "4" plugs to plug in your leads. The display is super big and there are features like frequency measurements that I'm not sure I'll ever use, but maybe I will. I would have gladly given it 5 stars if the clips worked, but they don't - trust me on this.
Pros: PRICE, large display, every function possible. And did I say price?
Cons: Throw the alligator clips in the trash immediately and buy some jumper cables.
I can't figure out how to illuminate the display.
Crummy operating manual but, if your smart enough to use a DVM, you can figure This one out.

I looked at the several multimeters Amazon displayed and picked this. It is heavy and feels like a solid piece of equipment It's something of a fiddle getting the included batterty in placeAs a bonus it has a keyhole cutout in back and a fold out stand. The leads aren't impressive but heavy duty looking, I will replace the alligator clips with mini grabbers It will replace two el chepo meters So far accuracy has been fine for my hobbyist needs. My only caveat is plan on replacing the leads
