Best small Mac keyboard to go "battery free"
Technical Artist✓ Verified Purchase•August 28, 2023
In recent years, I've used many Mac keyboards -- Apple, Logitech solar-powered, Logitech rechargeable, and several wired keyboards with a keypad. All of them sooner or later left me frustrated. Logitech's batteries wear down in a matter of months. The solar keyboard is no longer really available (except on the secondary market). And I just got tired of the "your keyboard has died, change the batteries again" routine.
Unfortunately I could never really find a suitable wired replacement, until I tried this keyboard. While it's not perfect, and it felt a little "clacky" when I first started using it, it is nevertheless the best solution if you don't want a full-sized keyboard with keypad crowding your desktop.
Pros:
* Wired (for me this is a plus) - no more batteries!
* Same approximate size, shape, and styling of Apple's official keyboard
* Performs reasonably as expected.
* No more wrestling with finicky wireless connections or batteries
* Price still seems high for machine-molded plastic and some minor electronics, but it's cheaper than competitors.
Cons:
* Feels a little cheap when you type at first... a little "clickety-clackety"
* Keys and typing action are not as nice as Macally's larger keyboards
* There is a bright, unnecessary power light at the top of the keyboard. It's distracting, so I taped over it.
* Plastic feels sturdy, but cheap
Macally also makes a great, low-priced silent wired mouse that is also excellent. Overall I give this keyboard a positive rating because it's the best solution I've found to solve the "stop using batteries" problem. A better keyboard could still be made, but since Apple discontinued their wired products we are left to search for third party providers. All things considered Macally did a credible job of providing a replacement.

Good compact keyboard, suggest USB ports on a future version.

I wanted a smaller keyboard like what Apple used to make. This one fits the bill and is a bargain at the price. But Macally, hint hint: I would gladly pay $20 more for one if it had USB ports on it. I hate wireless mice and keyboards because they are problematic, and it would be great to be able to plug my USB mouse into this keyboard (or a flash drive).
Handy keyboard

Just the right size very space saving.
All functions seem to work at this time

works fine, but lacks the solid feel of the (more expensive) aluminum Apple keyboards

Wanted a small form factor keyboard for my macbooks that come and go from my office and 27" display. I have a full-sized USB keyboard (Apple aluminum) which took up too much desk space. I also own a compact Apple wireless BT keyboard -- which worked fine. However, it was a pain to switch BT connection between my personal and work macbooks on the fly. Seemingly required power cycling of the keyboard, etc and it's a few minute process. Since the keyboard sits on the desk and plugs into my big monitor it does not need to be wireless -- just smaller! I purchased the Macally as it was small and cheap and USB. My only complaint was that it lacks the solid feel of the Apple aluminum body keyboards. Thus, I ended getting the USB Apple keyboard anyway. I'll probably keep this as a backup as it is perfectly fine -- just not enjoyable to type on all day long. I'm a developer -- so lots of hours of typing. Might be that I'm just overly picky about keyboards.
It works!

It works perfectly even with my old apple. Good quality at all.
