Are you one of those who always second-guesses whether your car mechanic can be trusted? Is the suggested repair reasonable and needed? I was in that boat during my college years and have had, in hindsight, been ripped off on a number of occasions. Some people just take advantage of youths knowing that they are inexperienced.

There are two parts to this Xtool device. As an OBD2 code reader and as a diagnostic/programming tool.

AS OBD2 CODE READER
When I had my first OBD2 code reader, I purchased it with the intent to diagnose my own problems and fix them myself whenever possible. The early ones simply gave you a code, and I had to search books on what they meant. Yes, this was before the Internet became a permanent part of my life. I remember having been alerted about a low brake fluid early on, and sure enough, it was low.

Today, the codes that the OBD2 scanner gives you can be easily found on the internet via a simple web search, and auto enthusiast sites, RepairPal, and other resources can readily give you suggestions on how to fix the issue yourself. It could be as simple as changing your air cabin filter (which itself is very easy to do -- just YouTube them for your car) and saving yourself a LOT of money.

If you are not the type to fix the issue yourself, at least the code can give you an idea of what may be wrong and then use sites like RepairPal to get yourself an estimate. The more you know, the less likely you will get ripped off by your mechanic.

AS OBD2 CODE READER, DIAGNOSTIC TOOL, AND PROGRAMMER
This Xtool takes the OBD2 reader a huge step to the next level: by visually showing you a variety of diagnostic options AND the ability to program and test specific parts of your car. In my case, I used it to program how the door lock of my Toyota Highlander behaves when the car is in motion or parked -- that saved me some money to not having to pay the dealer to perform. There's another way of setting that up via mechanical sequences (like how you used to enter cheat codes into Nintendo games), but that was cumbersome to set up (and took days of research to find out from a web forum the exact steps required.)

- Runs a very old version of Android
- No Google Play Store support (due to the old version of Android) to allow you to download the latest versions of any app
-- Keep in mind: Xtool device isn't designed to be used as a tablet, but having an app store would be a nice-to-have

NOTE: If you have a "Check Engine Light", fix it, and then reset the alert, keep in mind that your car will no longer have emissions data and may not pass smog check immediately after a reset. Instead, wait for a day or two of driving before taking your vehicle in for the smog inspection.

I am not a professional mechanic, but consider myself a competent DIY mechanic. I've had this scan tool for about two weeks.

There are many things I like about this tool, and very little to dislike.

First, the user interface takes a bit of getting used to, but with practice it gets easier. FWIW, it's based on an old version of the Android OS.

I bought this primarily for troubleshooting a 1996 GMC Suburban that I'm restoring, but also will use it for a 2008 Chevy HHR SS, a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup, and a 2021 Honda CRV.

The GMC has limited functions available, as 1996 is the first year for OBD2. This is not a limitation of the scan tool so much as a limitation of the technology in that particular vehicle. But it does what I need it to do. For example, it allowed me to diagnose a transmission issue which had been giving me fits. The inexpensive scanner that I have was not able to read any codes. The D8 does. It also reads all of the engine functions, and many of the transmission functions, as described in the GM Service Manual (of which I have a copy).

I also had the opportunity to compare the D8 with a Topdon ArtiDiag900 Lite. The Topdon has some nice features, including a more modern version of Android, and costs a bit less than the D8. It also supports the same functions on the GMC as the D8. However, when I tried it on the HHR, I found that it does not support several of the functions that the D8 does. For example, it does not have any TPMS functionality. The D8 does. I assume this will be the case with with the Ford Ranger and the Honda CRV also.

The D8 hardware seems pretty solid. It has an 8" screen, unlike most of its direct competitors, as well as larger battery capacity.

Sometimes I wish I had gone for the BT version, but the supplied OBD2 cord is long enough to allow setting the scanner on the passenger seat, if need be. I really like the kickstand on the back, which allows hanging it on top of the steering wheel. FWIW, the Topdon's kickstand did not. This may sound like a minor thing, but in practice it actually makes a difference.

I have to say that I am very pleased with XTool's customer service and technical support. I exchanged emails with them prior to purchasing the D8, and have continued on a couple of occasions after I made the purchase. At one point I seriously considered returning it, as one of the key functions I wanted was not supported by the D8. As it turns out, that particular function isn't supported by the OEM scanner either. It simply wasn't available on that year of vehicle. But after using it and seeing what it could do, on the GMC and on the newer vehicles, the responsiveness of XTool to my queries, having done a hands-on comparison with the Topdon, and reading about other scan tools in this price range, I decided to keep the D8.

I expect to get a lot of use out of this, and am glad to have it among my tools.

I went for the wireless D7W version of the XTool (wifi connectivity is fabulous and isn't available on any other scan tools in the similar price range). The bi-directional functions this D7W offers are incredibly useful and helped me diagnose and repair three vehicles in the three weeks I've owned this (I'm not a professional mechanic but pretend to be one on weekends). I spent a LOT of time comparing all the scan tools in the price range ( Autel, Topdon, Launch, Otofix . . . ) and watched all the YouTubers boast about their favorite brand but kept coming back to the D7W primarily for the WiFi wirelessness, bi-directionality and reasonable cost. Scanner has a nice build quality, good size screen and sturdy storage case. Plotting live stream PID data is fast and smooth, very enjoyable to watch. The customer support has been outstanding - I fired away numerous questions to them prior to my purchase and always had an answer by the next morning or sooner. I'm also impressed by the constant software updates that come in literally every day which are relevant to numerous individual worldwide vehicles, most of which you or I will never need but its interesting to know their tech support is constantly working on software improvements.

I highly recommend the D7W above all other scanners available on Amazon. Keep an eye on Amazon discounts, they frequently will apply a generous coupon on all of the XTool models.
