if necessary we had no way of know what was going on if there was a major power outage, so i felt i needed this just in case-and it gets AM and FM no problem, have not picked up any shortwave broadcasts yet but i suppose that is pretty hit or miss and i do not live in a high elevation. it will work with 'd' batteries or a transformer brick that outputs 3 volts, and AC power. recommend.
