Differences Between Brushed and Brushless Motors
When it comes to the motor types typically found in electric bikes and conversion kits alike, they fall into one of two categories. Brushed DC motors use a configuration of wound wire coil to interact with electromagnets and the motor itself. The coil does not rotate, but the brushes come into contact with the electromagnetic regularly, which are the primary differences from a brushed DC motor.
Brushed DC motors, otherwise known as a BLDC motors, use a permanent magnet to reach a similar result as a brushless motor. The coil rotates to meet this magnet, but there is no physical contact otherwise. This leads to a number of performance differences, which are slightly in line with when you compare direct drive vs a geared motor with electric bikes.
A brushed DC motor uses a configuration of wound wire coils- the armature acting as a two-pole electromagnet. When the motor is working, the coil and the commutator rotate, the permanent magnets and the brushes do not rotate, and the current direction change of the coil is completed by the commutator and the brush. When the current direction of the coil change, the electromagnet's poles are changed and push against the permanent magnets along the outside of the motor. This contact of brushes and commutator wears the brushes that these brushes have to be replaced regularly. This replacement is not so expensive but to manage this work itself is not so easy.
A brushless motor utilizes a permanent magnet as its external rotor or internal rotor. In addition, it uses three phases of driving coils and three hall sensors to track the rotor position. When the sensor tracks the rotor position, it sends out reference signals to the controller. Then the controller activates the coils in a structured way one phase after the other. The brushless motor adopts electronic commutation, the coil does not move, and the magnetic pole rotates. As there is no physical contact from any parts of the motor inside, therefore there is virtually no wear and tear possibilities, making the motor's durability limitless. These motors require sophisticated controllers, and it makes it possible for using three different windings, and power is supplied by individual windings according to the position they are in the movement. When the motor passes one winding, the controller passes the power to another winding, making the movement to continue without stopping.
Brushless solution
In brushless DC motors, an electronic servo system replaces the mechanical commutator contacts. An electronic sensor detects the angle of the rotor and controls semiconductor switches such as transistors which switch current through the windings, either reversing the direction of the current or, in some motors turning it off, at the correct angle so the electromagnets create torque in one direction. The elimination of the sliding contact allows brushless motors to have less friction and longer life; their working life is only limited by the lifetime of their bearings.
Brushed DC motors develop a maximum torque when stationary, linearly decreasing as velocity increases. Some limitations of brushed motors can be overcome by brushless motors; they include higher efficiency and lower susceptibility to mechanical wear. These benefits come at the cost of potentially less rugged, more complex, and more expensive control electronics.
A typical brushless motor has permanent magnets that rotate around a fixed armature, eliminating problems associated with connecting current to the moving armature. An electronic controller replaces the commutator assembly of the brushed DC motor, which continually switches the phase to the windings to keep the motor turning. The controller performs similar timed power distribution by using a solid-state circuit rather than the commutator system.
Brushless motors offer several advantages over brushed DC motors, including high torque to weight ratio, increased efficiency producing more torque per watt, increased reliability, reduced noise, longer lifetime by eliminating brush and commutator erosion, elimination of ionizing sparks from the commutator, and an overall reduction of electromagnetic interference. With no windings on the rotor, they are not subjected to centrifugal forces, and because the windings are supported by the housing, they can be cooled by conduction, requiring no airflow inside the motor for cooling. This in turn means that the motor's internals can be entirely enclosed and protected from dirt or other foreign matter.

Brushless motor commutation can be implemented in software using a microcontroller, or may alternatively be implemented using analog or digital circuits. Commutation with electronics instead of brushes allows for greater flexibility and capabilities not available with brushed DC motors, including speed limiting, microstepping operation for slow and fine motion control, and a holding torque when stationary. Controller software can be customized to the specific motor being used in the application, resulting in greater commutation efficiency.
The enhanced efficiency is greatest in the no-load and low-load regions of the motor's performance curve.
Environments and requirements in which manufacturers use brushless-type DC motors include maintenance-free operation, high speeds, and operation where sparking is hazardous or could affect electronically sensitive equipment.
The construction of a brushless motor resembles a stepper motor, but the motors have important differences due to differences in implementation and operation. While stepper motors are frequently stopped with the rotor in a defined angular position, a brushless motor is usually intended to produce continuous rotation. Both motor types may have a rotor position sensor for internal feedback. Both a stepper motor and a well-designed brushless motor can hold finite torque at zero RPM.
Brushless motors can be constructed in several different physical configurations. In the conventional inrunner configuration, the permanent magnets are part of the rotor. Three stator windings surround the rotor. In the external rotor outrunner configuration, the radial relationship between the coils and magnets is reversed; the stator coils form the center of the motor, while the permanent magnets spin within an overhanging rotor that surrounds the core. Outrunners typically have more poles, set up in triplets to maintain the three groups of windings, and have a higher torque at low RPMs. In the flat axial flux type, used where there are space or shape constraints, stator and rotor plates are mounted face to face. In all brushless motors, the coils are stationary.
There are two common electrical winding configurations; the delta configuration connects three windings to each other in a triangle-like circuit, and power is applied at each of the connections. The wye configuration, sometimes called a star winding, connects all of the windings to a central point, and power is applied to the remaining end of each winding. A motor with windings in delta configuration gives low torque at low speed but can give higher top speed. Wye configuration gives high torque at low speed, but not as high top speed. The wye winding is normally more efficient. Delta connected windings can allow high-frequency parasitic electrical currents to circulate entirely within the motor. A Wye-connected winding does not contain a closed loop in which parasitic currents can flow, preventing such losses. Aside from the higher impedance of the wye configuration, from a controller standpoint, the two winding configurations can be treated exactly the same.
Heating and ventilation
There is a trend in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration industries to use brushless motors instead of various types of AC motors. The most significant reason to switch to a brushless motor is a reduction in power required to operate them versus a typical AC motor. In addition to the brushless motor's higher efficiency, HVAC systems, especially those featuring variable-speed or load modulation, use brushless motors to give the built-in microprocessor continuous control over cooling and airflow.
Durability
Brushed DC hub motors are generally thought to be more durable and long-lasting than brushed hub motors. Why? There is not much physical contact between the components so they tend to stay in tip-top shape for a longer period of time. Brushless hub motors, on the other hand, feature brushes that constantly come into contact with the motor coil and other components. This leads to a degradation of these components, particularly the brushes themselves. In other words, you will have to get these brushes replaced regularly as a part of your overall maintenance routine.
Speed
Generally speaking, brushless motors allow for higher maximum speeds than brushed DC motors. This all boils down to energy efficiency. Brushless motors are highly efficient (85-90%) compared to brushed motors (75-80%). This increased efficiency also translates to battery life, which is important if you are comparing electric bike batteries of 36v and 12ah vs 48v 9ah.
Cost
Brushless motors will tend to cost more than brushed motor designs, which will translate to the cost of the e-bike or conversion kit itself.
Brushless DC Electric Motor Torque-Speed Characteristics
A BLDC motor has permanent magnets which rotate and a fixed armature, eliminating the problems of connecting current to the moving armature. An electronic controller replaces the brush/commutator assembly of the brushed DC motor, which continually switches the phase to the windings to keep the motor turning. The controller performs similar timed power distribution by using a solid-state circuit rather than the brush commutator system.
BLDC motors offer several advantages over brushed DC motors, including more torque per weight, more torque per watt increased efficiency, increased reliability, reduced noise, longer lifetime no brush and commutator erosion, elimination of ionizing sparks from the commutator, and overall reduction of electromagnetic interference .
The maximum power that can be applied to a BLDC motor is exceptionally high, limited almost exclusively by heat, which can weaken the magnets. Magnets demagnetize at high temperatures, the Curie point, and for neodymium-iron-boron magnets this temperature is lower than for other types. A BLDC motor's main disadvantage is higher cost, which arises from two issues. First, BLDC motors require complex electronic speed controllers to run. Brushed DC motors can be regulated by a comparatively simple controller, such as a rheostat variable resistor. However, this reduces efficiency because power is wasted in the rheostat. Second, some practical uses have not been well developed in the commercial sector. For example, in the Radio Control hobby arena, brushless motors are often hand-wound while brushed motors are usually machine-wound.

Shimano Shifter
This is the same Shimano seven speed shifter seen on our electric bikes. It is considered a "top bar" bike shifter. This is the only shifter that we found that will actually allow us to have our ebike throttle and a shifter on the same side of the handlebar. Lucky for us, it's one of the best bike shifters on the market.
This Shimano shifter is a seven speed, meaning it has 7 different shifting levels. On the surface, you have one large lever that you push with your thumb to shift up into low gear, and then there's a button that you can push that'll index through all seven gears to the highest gear. This Shimano shifter comes with an extra long cable and housing to fit on our longer frame bikes. It can be customized to fit on any length bike.
Do most e-bikes have bike gears? Do they use Shimano shifters?
The cheapest electric bikes will only have a single speed gearing system, meaning no shifter at all. In order to cut costs a lot of electric bikes below the $1,500 price point tend to only have 1 gear. In our eyes it's fundamental for a bike to still have multiple gears. Gears help aid in hill climbing and also offers more range and support of pedaling.
There are a lot of seven speed, eight speed, and nine speed shifters on the market in both the electric bike and regular bike markets. Seven speed is considered a standard.
What role does a shifter play in an electric bike? How does having a shifter help an electric bike?
If you have a hub motor electric bike, meaning the motor is located inside the wheel, the pedal ratios aren't super critical, but they certainly will enhance your ride. The shifter mainly just allows you to catch up to the motor and have some sort of feedback during pedal assist. Many ebikes will be single speed which can be tough to catch up with your pedal assist level, leaving you pedaling for pretty much no reason other than to operate the assist. A Shimano shifter lets the rider get a bit of exercise, rotating the legs and get closer to feeling the output of the assisted power. On a hub motor system the ratio is fixed inside the hub and the wheel will spin whether you're pedaling or not. What gear you're in wont make too much of a difference difference because the ratio built into the hub is a single ratio.
If you have a mid-drive motor, and you have speeds to shift through, then it works much like a transmission where you have the motor powering the chain ring or the sprocket. So, if you have seven speed with a mid-drive, that's like a transmission in a car and you get multiple ratios versus the one ratio at a hub motor
Great value, great fun

Freesky E Bike Review

First Impression: Extremely well packaged, components and finish look high quality. Comes with a tool kit.

Assembly: Fairly straight forward. Connect the handlebars, guidelines make it easy to center. Attach the front wheel and the headlight. The headlight was a newer model with a different attachment and the bolt was missing. I was able to use a bolt I had, and install was easy even they do have an updated video on their website. I didn't forget to pump up the tires. Range is 24 to 30, I went with 26 for a softer ride. The front suspension has adjustments for how hard and how deep the shock works, but the default settings were fine for me.

Charging: First charge took about four hours. Battery can be charged in the bike or outside. Only takes a few seconds to remove/install. An external additional battery is available. The battery has a lock to prevent theft.

First Ride: I took a ride with the battery out and it was not unlike riding any other mountain bike. It has seven gears and they shifted smoothly, and I used them all.

First E Ride: Rode up the steepest longest hill without any issue. Set the assist to level one and was able to pedal up without any difficulty. Tried riding over a few bumps and curbs and the front suspension absorbed them perfectly. Riding around the yard on grass, gravel and hills was a blast. There were a few times when I needed to use the throttle to get up a hill and there were times where I just hit the throttle for the sheer fun of it. I did find I used the gears less and stayed in 3 and 4 most of the time. I think that the impulse is to just hit the throttle a bit rather than drop a gear.

Fun Factor: I can't put into words just how much fun it is. Anytime you want to accelerate, just a tap on the throttle gets you moving quickly. The tires are massive and handle gravel and rocks with ease and comfort.

Controls: Gears are on the right handle bar and work like any other bicycle. Throttle is by the left thumb. There are three buttons for electronics. The center button is pressed and held to power on/off. The "+" button is pressed to increase assistance and held to power on/off the headlight. The "-" button is pressed to decrease assistance and held to activate cruise control. If you press and hold the "+" and "-" buttons, you enter the programming mode and can remove speed limits and set other options.

Comfort: The height, stability, and seat were all comfortable. The ride quality is excellent. Controls are easy to operate. There is a slight whine from the electric motor, but it won't bother anyone.

Other Stuff: The LED headlight is nice and bright, but the off-road cage blocks a lot of it. It bounces while riding but I don't think that's different than any other set up.

Assistance Levels: I expect that when on flat paved surfaces like the rail trail, I would turn off any assistance and just ride normally. On the street, in hilly areas, on unpaved areas, I would expect to use one of the assistance levels based on your ability. For real off-road riding, you would probably use the full electric mode and ride it more like a dirt bike.

Upgrades: It did not come with a bottle cage, so that's an easy, no brainer option. The pedals are OK, but the pegs are not tall enough for any rough terrain, so I upgraded those. I ordered a frame bag with a phone holder. I decided to get a left side view mirror to see coming cars when I am on the street.

Legality: In NYS, there are no licenses or registration required as of now. Some trails do not allow "motorized vehicles" so if you leave the factory speed limits in place, it is only a class one electric bike and not a motorized vehicle.
Worth it! Especially off road riding.

If you're on the fence with this company or this particular e-bike hopefully this will make up your mind. I am 100% happy with the Freesky Himalaya. I have put over 30 miles on the bike, half of which were a mix of asphalt and light trails, and the other half being purely off road on what some would consider ATV/dirt bike trails. My buddy and I each bought one to use for public land hunting in North Georgia for whitetail and duck hunting. Law requires e-bikes be 750 watts or less to use on WMA. Last weekend we took them to the area to scout and they did not disappoint at all. I am 200+ pounds and my buddy is 260+ pounds. We each had bags, gun racks and extra gear loaded on the bike. They had plenty power to get us up hills with just electric throttle and for the steeper hills we just peddled assist a little bit to help get over the top and it was super easy. It's usually a 30+ minute walk to our hunting area but these bikes cut that down to a little over 11 minutes. I knew these bikes would beat walking, but they did more than we expected. We rode about 6-7 miles round trip in all kinds of terrain, clay hard pack, soft grass, light mud, and rocks. The batteries were great, only lost 1 bar and that was because we were riding up decently steep hills on throttle only, not much pedal assist. The front suspension was comfortable once you get the correct preload and compression settings dialed in for your weight. Installation was easy, front wheel, handle bars, seat, and pedals then you're ready to ride. There's not many reviews of these as far as pure off road riding which was why we were undecided on this bike but it sure beats $3500+ for a the other hunting oriented e bikes on the market. I would 100% recommend these to anybody looking for an on or off road e bike.
powerful 750W Bafang motor with 15AH Samsung battery means Premium Quality Power house ebike
XennialLife ✓ Verified PurchaseJuly 7, 2023
The media could not be loaded. The packaging of the Freesky 750W stood out as soon as the shipping box was opened: there was an almost obsessive amount of protection applied to all parts, including metal braces to protect the rear derailleur and front fork. I had rarely seen that level of safeguarding with a non-US/EU branded bicycle before. My first impression of this bike and the company started off as impressive and pride of their product.
Attaching the front wheel, front fender, handlebar, pedals, kickstand, and front headlight, as well as adjusting cables, was a breeze. In fact, no major adjustments were required, including the brake and gear shift cables, as well as the Tektro disc brakes. I was expecting to make some adjustments to the front and rear disc brake modules, but it worked perfectly right out of the box. The bike came with 26" x 4" CST tires, a 26" aluminum frame, and lubed bike chains. We took it for its maiden voyage after adjusting the seat post height to fit me between 5'4"²"² and 5'6"²"²), handlebar attack angle, and charging the battery fully for about 3 to 4 hours.
The LCD control panel showed the units in "mph" and the display was bright and easy to read. The battery level was visible on both the display in 20 percent increments and by pressing a button on the battery itself will show the power status. The motor's assistance amount could be controlled by pushing the "+" and "-" buttons on the LCD unit: from completely off to as many as 5 levels of power, including Pedal Assist (PAS). The current speed, as well as other trip information and the odometer reading, were also displayed. At night this is very bright and you're able to see all the important information without any issues. Even with polarized sunglass will not affect this screen.
I love that Freesky integrated their battery into the frame which gives it a very sleek innovative design. The battery is detachable and can be locked with the provided keys, allowing the bike to be left outside while the 720Wh battery (48V @ 15A) is brought into the office or home for desk-side charging. It took approximately 6 to 8 hours to fully charge. During my first few rides I worked the math out to about 37 to 50 mi range with pedal assist and 25 to 35 miles when in full electric mode. The bike's top speed was around 32 mph, but local US law allowed for up to 20 mph in general.
Shimano's gear shifting system performed admirably. With only 7 gears, it won't be able to climb the most difficult trails, but it's ideal for city riding. Why would gears be important on an eBike? What if the battery died? Pedaling a 73-pound bike up inclines without motor assistance or the ability to shift gears can be extremely difficult, so the variable speeds are a welcome relief. The lockable front fork suspension made for a smooth ride. I was able to go on and off road without much issues, the powerful motor pushed me through all that terrian without any lag. I also love the upgraded LED projector headlight which laid out a perfect beam pattern on the path ahead of me.

Overall, the Freesky 750W was a full-featured eBike with a design aimed at people who want off-road excitement while also wanting to cruising around parks, cities and towns. Biking is both a healthy activity and a great way to bond with one another, and having an electric bike of high quality and strong motor tops it all. I felt this brand Freesky was a lot more innovative than others on the current market around the same price range, the samsung battery paired with BAFANG motor sealed the deal.
Bafang is known for their high quality best performing motors that set the gold standard early in the ebike world.
Great customer support, good hill-climbing ability

First, I am 300 lbs, 6'5" and it easily climbed the steep hills I was worried it wouldn't make it up with me. I do need to get a longer seat post and stem riser extension but I have done that on another bike, which also fits well.
My bike wouldn't turn on at all. The customer support representative emailed me back a few hours later on a Sunday night! They are available day and evening hours and weekends to help you. Working with her, she diagnosed it to be the display screen, which had to be shipped from China, because it was something unusual. Their warranty team and warehouse doesn't stock it. The only issue was it took an extra 7 days to be shipped because it was ordered during China's Golden Week. That is their national holiday (like our 4th of July) only everything closes and nothing can be shipped during those seven days. Once received, I installed the display and power controller buttons easily and went climbing to test whether it was worth keeping. I am keeping it.
