Poor choice for small numbers of lights.
Egbert✓ Verified Purchase•February 24, 2018
A poor choice. The only reason I bought this was that I received a Phillips HUE Bridge in my Christmas stocking. The giver did not know that the Bridge was necessary to operate the HUE bulbs. I ordered the bridge thinking that it would and could serve as a smart hub for other smart devices. How wrong I was. This expensive device only controls Phillips HUE light bulbs. I installed it and My Echo - Alexa can turn on and off my one and only HUE bulb. I could have a whole basket full of regular wi-fi smart switches for the price charged for this limited use hub. It works as advertised but is only useful if you intend to manage up to 50 HUE light bulbs. If you intend for Echo to be your voice command controller then this is too expensive for small numbers of lights. Fortunately I also received a pre-paid gift card which I used to order this bridge. Otherwise, I would have returned the HUE bulb for credit.
More than a "cool gadget"...it really helps you in a few ways.

I'm a geek...a nerd. Let's get that out of the way now. So, things like Philips Hue lights are right up my alley. I want everything automated, scheduled and online. That's what the Hue Smart Bridge delivers. I paired this with 10 Hue lights, both Color and White. It works like a champ. I have it set to a timer daily. Alarm goes off at 7am, BOOM...lights. I leave for work at 8am. BOOM...lights off.
The routines are set up easily and work daily! The bridge comes with it's own routines you can choose from or you can create your own. It truly gives you all sorts of control over your lighting and mood.
Listen, if you're on the fence about this, I get it. I really do. Before I got it, I sort of thought it was gimmicky, but I have to say that after having it for a while now, it is more than just a "cool gadget". After the cool factor wears off, it is really a very useful tool. You will not have to worry about the lights in whatever room you need. It gives a sense of safety and helps you save energy as well.

Works solid but wireless range can be problematic
M. J. McDonald✓ Verified Purchase•March 4, 2017
Totally necessary for building a Hue system. The unit itself works flawlessly and exactly as advertised. A problem is in the system design. This bridge needs to be plugged directly into an internet access point (e.g., where Internet comes into your house). The ZigBee communications it uses is transmitted at 2.4 GHz and, as such, is range limited and subject to a variety of interferences. This means communication will be spotty if your access point is a long way from your lights. For example, I brought my lights and bridge to a party in my friend's back yard where the distance was an issue. As a result, the system would loose communications regularly and the apps controlling the system would stop working (e.g., the light show would freeze). If that describes your setup, well, maybe find some sort of range extender.
Works perfectly with iOS, the Home app, and Siri
James R.✓ Verified Purchase•December 3, 2016
I bought this specifically because it was compatible with my iPhone and Homekit... with the latest "Home" app in iOS, controlling my lights is seamless and very easy. If I'm super lazy I can ask Siri to turn my lights on and off and it works every time.
Really unhappy with Philips for needing this upgrade to use ...
Tim J. Thomas✓ Verified Purchase•October 30, 2016
Really unhappy with Philips for needing this upgrade to use Apple HomeKit. Doesn't add any other features that the old hub didn't have, as far as I can tell. Still suffers from the same problem that the old style hub had, it loses its connection just as often. Also, I've had to manually enter the serial numbers of each Hue bulb before the hub would recognize it. At least it finally did find all my Hue bulbs. No plus points for Philips on this one.
