very good with limitations and issues

I waited quite a while to review the e-bike since I had issues with 4 separate bikes and I wanted to get past that. First let me say that I am still positive on this swagtron despite the issues. They were all different on each. I believe the first I received had been used. There were clear indications that that was the case and the brakes were horrible. The second I received came damaged and it didn't appear to happen while shipping to me. The 3rd was great in every way except it kept showing a general error code and this made the display mostly useless. The forth has been great in every respect except the brakes. They are really low end and they grab and squeal like crazy. I am very strong mechanically and that I have worked on bikes my entire life. I tried cleaning and adjusting them but the silence only lasted for a few uses. Keep reading for a solution. Since all of these issues were different I kept trying for a good example. With the exception of the brakes the last unit has been flawless and I really like the bike especially given the price and value. I find it to be very comfortable and easy to ride. This is a one speed bike so you can only pedal up until about 5mph. That helps to conserve the battery when starting off or going up a hill. I did some testing in my area that included a lot of stopping and two fairly big hills over a highway. I didn't pedal at all during the test and the battery was still able to run the bike at a lower speed after 7 miles. I weigh about 225 so this seemed pretty good to me. I mentioned a fix for the poor brakes. Well fortunately the Swagtron is designed with standard brake component mounting points so I was able to replace the rotors and calipers with shimano parts. What a difference. This will cost you about $75 and some work but its so worth it. I was also able to convert a bike rack found on amazon to fit the bike. I mounted the rack to the seat post and the top of the shock. It took some work but it looks great and will work for what I want to carry. I will try and add some pictures soon
Exceeded Expectations

I purchased the unit at the end of October and wanted to wait a bit before providing a review.
First my small complaints.
1. Seat is just not the most comfortable. It's a good seat, racing style but just not for me. Remedy is easy, buying a cruiser seat and replacing which is what I will do. Others may find it fine. There are also gel covers for extra comfort regardless.
2. It has/had a most annoying rear brake squeal. I'll assume like with a car disc setup there are occasions where the disc brake pad is somewhat out of alignment which makes the same noise. It has diminished and last ride I did not hear it. I was going to simply adjust the brake if the noise had persisted.
That's it. Small complaints, small remedies.

The positive. Everything else!
The bike has three modes, regular riding (single speed), pedal assist, total electric. In the electric mode you have three speeds. Lower the speed the better the battery life. I've reached 19.6 mph on a slight downhill and in the lowest speed still maintain a good 9.5 mph. Speeds will of course vary by rider weight and terrain. The pedal assist function is strictly for hills/grades. Assisting the motor to 'power up' the grade. If you ride on a level surface and pedal, the motor will kick in and you'll not be able to pedal as quickly as the bike will be traveling.
It folds easily yet be warned it weighs in at 40+ pounds. There's not locking mechanism in the folded position so when traveling a good bungee cord wrap keeps it secure. The battery is replaceable which was one of the reasons I made this purchase. The battery compartment is lockable and easily accessible. The replacement batteries are not yet available.
I've had decent range with lower draw on the battery in the low setting (1). Speeds two and three increase the speed but curtail the distance accordingly. Again based upon rider weight and geography.
It has a front headlight that is quite bright yet I've gotten a bright set of front and rear LED's. Also a horn that is somewhat wanting.
It's a fun bike to ride and turns heads often. I find it fun to just leisurely turn the pedals while the bike is bolting along at 15 mph and look at the reactions of my neighbors and on the roadway. Nothing but good things to say about this bike. Also, the price. You can easily spend a whole lot more for not much less, if anything. Swagtron hosts a website for its products, warranty, owners manuals, contact information.
Highly recommend.
A good product at a good price. this is very comfortable, the battery lasts, and a great value.

This is a high-quality bike at a great price, The battery holds a good charge, it folds up and doesn't need very much space to store, it is very comfortable to ride.
I love this bike but be careful breaking hard.

I have had the bike almost a month and I ride it 3 to 4 times a week for about 20 mins usually just in my neighborhood subdivision. It is so much fun. But be careful braking hard. I tried coming to a full stop while attempting to lean in to a right turn that was at least 90 degrees. I started off in the left lane (wrong side of the street in usa) to make the right turn. I was doing 30 mph down hill and suddenly a vehicle approached the corn of the street that I was going to turn in front of me. They were going to turn right directly in front me before I could turn. It was at night my headlight was on but I wasn't sure they saw me. I broke hard on the front and rear brakes causing the rear wheel to come off the ground and I went flying over the handle bars landing on my hands a knee and feet. Nothing but scratches on me and a little blood but it was scary. The top of my break handles have scratches now. The bike continues to perform great but my front brakes now squeak and I don't know what to do to fix that yet. I think if the bike had front shocks and possibly longer frame or wider wheel base it wouldn't try to flip on hard breaks on lower speeds I've seen with less extreme circumstances this can still happen. So now I break rear first and then front brakes if I need more stopping power to limit the momentum and weight shift on the bike. I've only had to fully recharge the battery 4 times due to my limited usage. If you ride at night with the headlight on wear some eye wear because it attracts a lot of bugs. I wear a helmet and after my experience I'm going to get some gloves and knee pads. I road bikes my entire childhood to teen years without these things but now I need them. This is my first bike as a 5'9 adult and maybe its the years of inactivity on a bike that shows.
Can't Beat The Value To Money. No Competition

Can't Beat The Value To Money. No Competition in this category. You can now get 2 additional batteries and still be under $960 as of this post. You will never have to worry about battery if you only get 1 spare (Which is what I Did)

Pros:
1. Price=$599 plus tax and 2 additional batteries is still under all the competition
2. Battery=I have had a difficult time draining this battery and am receiving the 15 mile range (I do peddle up hill and change the rates as needed) if you only use it a s moped, prepare for 10 max. I do live in hilly California too
3. Cheap Additional batteries available now= These proprietary batteries are DIRT cheap in comparison to batteries you buy with DIY kits. You can get 2~3 of these batteries for the price of 1 DIY kit batteries.
4. Bright Headlight= This headlight is bright at night and the eb5 does not offer this (nor removable battery)
5. Climbs Steep Hills= Using gear 1, I'm able to get up really steep hills. However, you will be winded when you get to the top, but hey, it's great exercise
6. Cardio=Yes you can get great cardio with this bike on gear 1. Yes you will look like a hamster in a wheel, but it's like doing a speed cycle class AND still go around 15mph.
7. Battery Life= As mentioned earlier, I'm getting the full 15 miles and still have juice left. I have yet to be able to use my spare...But it's nice to have that piece of mind in my back pack.

Cons:
1. Heavy: This thing is not light. I'm pretty muscular and work out with heavy weights daily. Seriously, I'm pretty jacked and look like I'm on steroids, but this thing is a beast to lug up and down stairs. Even putting in in the back of your car is not that easy. They need to come up with a better design on how to carry it easier once folded.
2. Only 36v on 350w motor=People over 200lbs+ have been recording the e 30 error code which the information from the esc is not reading correctly. They state that it's fine when the battery is fully charge, but then receive the error message when the battery level goes down. My theory, is that the bigger motor really needs more volts (48v) in my opinion that will deliver more power to the esc when the battery drains. Heavier riders are putting more stress on the motor and the voltage needs to be higher for the load. I'm only 168lbs, and with my backpack and gear is an all up weight of only 187ibs. Swagtron...Make the next 16" model with a 48V 13ah battery like the Samebike xmz1214 (Which is the Swagtrons biggest competition, but don't sell in the States)
3. Seat hurts over long rides=Though the suspension is great, the seat sux. You will need to replace it if you plan on long commutes in comfort. Like I mentioned before, I'm only 168lbs and it hurts.
4. Too many compliments! I know, how is that a con. Well, Everytime and I mean Everytime I ride this bike people compliment how awesome it is. I chained it at Starbucks and watched from inside while using my laptop and so many people stopped to get a closer look at it. My great is leaving this thing even chained with proper U locks, will get it stolen where I live. It looks and feels very expensive.

Conclusion:
Awesome ebike that is MUCH cheaper than doing a DIY bike on even a used bike. all in one solution that is best in it's class and blows the doors off of other 16" ebikes that are over $1000. You will love this bike!!
